POSITION STATUS: 1.00 | Full-Time

JOB DUTIES: Are you a passionate and dedicated psychiatrist looking to make a meaningful impact in the lives of individuals with mental health challenges? If so, we invite you to become a vital part of our team at the Kaua'i Region Medical Group (KRMG), a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization, with the Hawai'i Health Systems Corporation (HHSC) Kaua'i Region serving as its sole member. Our facilities include Kaua'i Veterans Memorial Hospital (KVMH), Samuel Mahelona Memorial Hospital (SMMH), and the Kaua'i Region Clinics, and we are eager to welcome a new member to our dynamic team!

Join our dynamic team as a Psychiatrist, where you will provide clinical leadership alongside the Director to ensure that our treatment approaches are evidence-based and outcome-driven. In this vital role, you will conduct initial assessments, risk assessments, and ongoing treatments, including crisis intervention, while working collaboratively with our clinical staff to deliver services within a framework of self-determination, recovery, and cultural competency. You will provide direct patient care to Dual Diagnosis and Severely Disabled Mentally Ill (SDMI) populations across inpatient, intensive outpatient, and outpatient clinic programs. As an integral part of our multidisciplinary team, you will help us deliver client-centered, culturally competent care with the highest standards of quality. Please note that this position is regional and may require long hours, weekend and holiday work, and travel to various facilities within the region to meet patient care needs.

THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS ARE: Applicants must meet all of the following requirements. Please note that unless specifically indicated, the required education and experiences may not be gained concurrently. In addition, qualifying work experiences are based on a 40-hour work week. Applicants are required to provide evidence of education, certification, and licensure.

EDUCATION:

  • Graduation from an accredited medical or osteopathic school with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathy (DO) degree; AND
  • Completion of a psychiatric residency program accredited by the American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) or the American Osteopathic Association (AOA).

LICENSURE:

  • A current license to practice medicine in the State of Hawai'i is required. The physician must be duly licensed as a Doctor of Medicine or Osteopathy and approved for Active Staff membership and clinical privileges on the Hospital's Medical Staff in accordance with the Hospital's Medical Staff bylaws and Rules and Regulations. The physician is also required to maintain Active Medical Staff membership and appropriate clinical privileges at the Hospital throughout the term of this Agreement; AND
  • Membership in good standing with Kaua'i Medical Associates, an independent physician association, is required; AND
  • A current, valid State of Hawai'i type #3 driver's license is preferred; AND
  • Current registration with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and a current State Controlled Substance license from the State of Hawai'i Department of Public Safety's Narcotics Enforcement Division (NED) are mandatory.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Current certifications issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) in Basic Life Support (adults, child, infant, etc.) for Healthcare Workers AND Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) are required (candidates for certain specialties may be required to possess current certifications issued by the AHA in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) and/or in the Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)); AND
  • Current board certification by an appropriate certifying organization in psychiatry.

EXPERIENCE:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of current DSM criteria.
  • Proficient in crisis assessment tools and techniques.
  • Strong foundational knowledge of general psychiatric principles and practices.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Commitment to continuing education in rural medicine practices.
  • Demonstrated excellence in bedside manner and patient interaction.
  • Flexibility to work irregular hours, with the ability to stand for extended periods and manage limited rest periods.
  • Willingness to travel to multiple sites as needed.

CREDENTIALING: Applicants must be fully credentialed by the HHSC Kaua'i Region Medical Staff Administration department before employment.
