Your Opportunity
We are excited to announce a new opportunity for a Senior Mechanical Engineer within our newly formed Delivery Center Team! The home office for this role can be in any location in Canada where the Energy & Resources (E&R) Business Operating Unit (BOU) has a presence.

The Delivery Center Team is being created in the E&R BOU to enhance our commitment to exceptional project execution through integrated global working. This team is a group of engineers, designers and technologists organized by discipline with transferrable skills intended to augment projects across all of E&R. Through cross training of skills, increased collaboration, and improved usage of global design centers, we are evolving our organization to an appropriate balance of project delivery via frontline Business Centers (BCs) and Delivery Center teams. This will encourage a 'right person-right job' approach for all projects and clients, maximize the effectiveness of our resources, increase our agility, and ultimately grow our overall portfolio of work while providing valuable growth opportunities for our team members. It is an exciting opportunity for mechanical engineering support of a broad spectrum of projects in the E&R space.

Purpose of the Role
As part of the Delivery Center team, the senior mechanical engineer is responsible for working independently on projects ranging in size and complexity through all phases of a project lifecycle. You will have diverse exposure to projects across within the Energy and Resources business operating unit, which includes Mining, Materials, and Metals, Oil & Gas, and Power and Dams. You will interact with frontline business center staff regularly and are comfortable leading projects and interfacing with clients. You will be a subject matter expert in one or more specialties within mechanical engineering, which could include pipe stress analysis or hydraulic analysis.

Continuous improvement and innovation are important to you, as well as streamlining deliverable production and enhancing Stantec's library of standardized calculation templates and documents. Mentoring and supporting junior staff is a critical element of the role.

Essential Functions
  • Perform advanced engineering design tasks on assigned projects under minimal supervision, including engineering drawings, calculations, engineering reports, and presentations.
  • Apply appropriate codes and standards to projects and designs, including piping and pressure vessel codes, material standards, and various static and rotating equipment codes and standards.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders in project requirement meetings, coordination meetings with internal and/or external consultants, owner and contractor, sub-contractors, and vendors in preparation and coordination of project specifications.
  • Oversee and manage the quality of project deliverables using Stantec's quality control guidelines.
  • Act as a technical advisor on more unusual or complex issues and guide staff on solutions.
  • Apply advanced knowledge of current principles and practices of mechanical engineering and keeps informed of new methods and developments.
  • Apply knowledge and expertise acquired through progressive experience to resolve complex issues where precedent may be limited.
  • Leading by example, integrates continuous improvement concepts and techniques into all aspects of the job.
  • Contribute to the development of standardized calculation or design templates.
  • Develop Design Basis Memorandums (DBMs).
  • Participate in client requirement and design review meetings.
  • Contribute to the development of new standards and specifications of mechanical design.
  • Create implementation instructions and scopes of work for construction work packages.
  • Create pre-commissioning or commissioning procedures.
  • Lead creation of project and/or material specifications.
  • Engages in the development of a design through sketches, electronic models, diagrams, and other visual formats.
  • Utilizes technologies in development of models of mechanical systems and provides markups for junior engineers/ designers.
  • Prepares and revises documentation in various mechanical phases.
  • Participate in client/vendor/contractor meetings potentially including HAZOP, 3D model reviews and design reviews.
  • Develops project scope, budgets, and design approach for all sizes of projects.
  • Conducts quality assurance and quality control on own projects and projects of peers.
  • Assists in the development of new standards and specifications for the mechanical group.
  • Produce piping specifications and hydrotest procedures.
  • Participate in constructability reviews.
  • Manage and execute mechanical engineering deliverables on multiple projects in a dynamic work environment.
  • Engineer of record for designs and documents you create and oversee.
  • Provide direct mentoring to assigned staff; develop staff skills and abilities by providing guidance and mentoring to strengthen technical abilities.
  • Become a champion of Stantec's EH&S program.


Qualifications

Your Capabilities and Credentials
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university. At least 15 years of mechanical engineering work experience related to mining projects. Proven technical leader within the discipline of Mechanical Engineering.
  • Professional Engineering designation in home jurisdiction with eligibility for registration in other jurisdictions.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of project delivery models including E, EP, EPC, EPCM. Well versed in basic project management practices.
  • Advanced understanding of mechanical engineering specifications, analytical tools and software, industry standards, practices, and applicable codes/regulations. Experience in numerous sectors and geographies is an asset.
  • Familiarity with Mechanical design software (Autodesk, Bentley and Hexagon products) including AutoCAD, AutoPLANT, CADWorx, Caesar II, AutoPIPE, Inventor and PV Elite. Familiarity with other related software such as AFT, NozzlePRO and FEPipe is also an asset.
  • Strong understanding of all phases of project document production and the relationship between drawings and specifications.
  • Proven mentoring skills and desire to work with and encourage junior staff.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, means and methods, materials, and industry standards.
  • Checks the work of others for accuracy and completeness and manages time to meet project budget and schedule.
  • Participates and collaborates in multidisciplinary project team setting and to engage in creative and critical thought with a passion for successful outcomes.
  • Demonstrates creativity, foresight and mature engineering judgment in anticipating and solving problems
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical engineering concepts and ability to proactively and effectively communicate ideas to others.
  • Detailed understanding of and ability to execute/work with project deliverables such as Process Flow Diagrams, P&IDs, Isometrics, General Arrangements, equipment list, line list, etc.
  • Detailed understanding of various equipment used in oil & gas such as vessels, tanks, heat exchangers & coolers, heaters, rotating equipment (pumps and compressors), packaged equipment, valves & specialty items.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work across multiple offices and geographies while managing competing priorities.
  • Exemplary communication skills to effectively interface with all team members.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, and a proven ability to write clear, thorough technical reports.
  • Holds paramount corporate HSSE requirements and promotes a culture of HSSE excellence.
