Role DescriptionThe Electrode Mechanical Engineering team within the Core Technology group at Form is multidisciplinary and focused on delivering qualified battery anode and cathode designs that meet operational performance targets, at cost and with high reliability, from controlled processes on high-volume manufacturing lines for Form Energy's utility-scale multi-day energy storage system.
We're seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our team and play a crucial role in designing components for our battery cell design! You'll own the design of components and assemblies from concept to production, with a strong emphasis on design for manufacturing and assembly. As a problem solver, you'll creatively tackle mechanical design challenges and apply your knowledge of designing metal and plastic components for mass manufacturing. You'll work cross-functionally with teams on requirements definition and verification plans to deliver a design that meets those requirements. Comfortable working in a prototype shop environment, you'll communicate with manufacturers to deliver an optimized, production-ready design. Troubleshooting design problems as they arise and working with the Electrode & Cell Engineering design teams to implement improvements will also be a part of your responsibilities. If this sounds like the perfect opportunity for you, apply now!
Relocation assistance is available.
What you'll do:- Lead the design of a full electrode assembly or complex sub-assembly integral to the battery cell electrodes and electrode stack assembly
- Develop functional requirements and DFMEAs in close collaboration with members of the Cell Engineering, Electrode Engineering, and Systems Engineering teams
- Perform hands-on prototyping of designs and collaborate with broader teams to build integrated prototypes
- Collaborate closely with the manufacturing team to gather and implement DFM / DFA feedback into designs.
- Release designs consistent with company and team best practices (GD&T, drawings, tolerance analysis, etc)
- Demonstrate design functionality through analysis (e.g. FEA, CFD) and component- or system-level testing
- Work with external vendors, manufacturing engineers, and technical operations to transition designs from concept to prototype phase to high volume production
- Drive verification testing of your design work.
What you'll bring:- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field; Bachelor's with 5+ years, or Master's with 3+ industry experience in mechanical design
- Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD), specifically SolidWorks modeling and drafting
- Proficient in component design for mass manufacturing and assembly (DFMA), especially formed / stamped sheet metal and injection molded plastic components.
- Proficient with prototyping techniques and working in a machine shop environment
- Experience working with batteries, energy storage, fuel cells, or electrolyzers is a plus
- Experience with plating technologies is a plus
- Experience with the design and verification of mechanical systems using FEA is a plus.
