Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Description

The Senior Level Mechanical Designer/Engineer performs a variety of assignments involving the application of standard mechanical design engineering techniques for HEAPY projects in the Columbus area for Corporate clients. This colleague accomplishes specific objectives that involve different variables related to mechanical engineering systems in the Built Environment.

Base Qualifications
  • Possession of a 4-year engineering degree from an ABET-accredited program or equivalent working knowledge/experience in a built environment with an advanced degree in engineering.
  • Typically 6 - 9 years of related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience/advanced degree in engineering) related to mechanical engineering systems in the Built Environment.
  • For Designer Candidates, possession of a high school diploma/GED and extensive experience working with mechanical engineering systems in the Built Environment.
  • Capability of exercising judgment in evaluating, selecting, and applying standard design engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to make design adaptations and modifications.
  • Considerable experience using various computer software packages and automated mechanical engineering and design equipment.
  • For Engineering candidates, possession of a Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Certification and be working toward Professional Engineering (PE) Registration. PE registration would be attained within the first 2 years of attaining this position level.
  • For higher level achievement, other relevant engineering education and credentials are typically desired, such as but not limited to: USGBC LEED GA, IESNA, ASPE, ASHRAE HFDP, or HBDP


Key Responsibilities
  • Ensures accurate input into the model or design tool and focuses on understanding the underlying reasons (i.e., ask questions).
  • Develops full plan designs, details, and outlines, identifies materials, cost estimates, and performs calculations for a detailed segment of a project.
  • Gathers and records information for the preparation of design specifications. Reviews/evaluates vendor (and at higher levels, approves) shop drawings, bids, and submittals to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Reviews and approves mechanical design drawings for assigned segments of projects.
  • If PE has been obtained, serves as the engineer of record as applicable.
  • Assists with the development of design guides, guide specifications, and design control procedures when directed by a technical leader/design manager.
  • Prepares technical reports such as life cycle cost analysis, facility conditions assessments, and other engineering guidance for clients.
  • Leverages AI and automation in design and project responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Meets project deadlines with punctuality, monitoring progress, and ensuring deliverables meet requirements.
  • Ensures project deliverables adhere to client project requirements, meet required standards and implements corrective action as needed.
  • Delivers exceptional quality assurance to build trust, increase brand loyalty, and drive success and innovation.
  • Builds strong customer relationships by delivering exceptional service that exceeds expectations.
  • Aids and supports proposal teams or proposal managers as requested.
  • May collaborate with operations and practice leadership on project staffing requirements and resource allocation.
  • Collaborates with and supports/leads design engineers/designer I & II colleagues on their technical development and professional growth.
  • Collaborates with additional partners, such as BIM technicians and third-party partners, on the successful and timely completion of project tasks and deliverables.
  • Interacts and coordinates with clients/owners to develop Owner Project Requirements.
  • Additional responsibilities as requested/needed.


Physical Demands and Work Environment
  • Ability to remain sedentary at a workstation for long periods of time while operating a keyboard and using a computer screen.
  • Ability to operate a mouse, stylus, or similar tool to make adjustments on electronic visuals.
  • Ability to see details of objects on a screen, including differences in colors, shades, and brightness.
  • Ability to communicate in person, electronically, and via phone with other individuals.
  • Possession of reliable transportation to and from project sites.
  • Ability to work in all elements of indoor and outdoor environments, which include the heat, cold, rain, snow, wind, etc.
  • Ability to access all areas of the jobsite with activities that include ascending and descending stairs, scaffolding, ladders, navigating elevation changes, etc.
  • Capable of working in physical positions that may include maneuvering oneself into different positions traditionally achieved by kneeling, sitting, standing, squatting, bending over, etc.
  • Ability to move, transport, or position items weighing up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to apply established protocols and practices in a timely manner and follow safety guidelines for both the company and clients.
  • Ability to gather, organize, and evaluate information related to projects and calculations (such as cost analysis, facility assessments, design calculations, etc.).
