JOB SUMMARY

This position assists the Assistant Deputy Director - Ridership Analysis in leading and managing the development, implementation, and maintenance of innovative technological and graphical tools used to monitor, analyze, visualize, and report ridership data. Support the enhancement of data-driven decision-making by ensuring the accuracy, accessibility, and effectiveness of ridership performance reporting and analytics.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Lead the development, enhancement, and maintenance of high-quality business intelligence tools and dashboards that integrate ridership data from multiple sources into clear, accessible, and actionable reporting products.
  • Lead the creation of analytical reports, visualizations, and presentations that effectively communicate ridership trends, patterns, and performance metrics for both recurring and ad hoc business needs.
  • Establish, implement, and maintain graphic design and data visualization standards to ensure consistency, comparability, and clarity across departmental reports, dashboards, and analytical products.
  • Manage the development, management, and continuous improvement of methodologies used to estimate customer loads and ridership patterns, including load-weight estimation models, onboard survey programs, and daily reporting of maximum load metrics to support service planning and operational decision-making.
  • Assist in the evaluating, testing and implementing automated passenger counting technologies to enhance ridership measurement capabilities and reporting efficiency.
  • Develop and implement innovative strategies and processes to expedite the collection, analysis, and reporting of ridership data associated with scheduled special events, including sporting events, parades, marathons, and other large-scale activities, as well as weather related and other emergent service events.
  • Lead and assist in the development, implementation, and maintenance of operational data visualizations and reporting tools that support cross-departmental functions, including track utilization, infrastructure outages, service impacts, and operational performance monitoring.
  • Lead and assist in the design and development of visualizations that effectively communicate simulated operational data, translating complex modeling and analytical results into clear, actionable insights for operational planning, capital project evaluation, and executive decision making.
  • Lead the identification, development, and validation of new and enhanced ridership data sources, collection techniques, and analytical methodologies to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and usefulness of ridership reporting and forecasting.
  • Manage the design, development, and maintenance of automated database queries, data pipelines, and data integration processes that support the continuous delivery of reliable, refreshable data streams for dashboards, reports, and analytical products.
  • Oversee all aspects of ridership data acquisition, extraction, transformation, validation, formatting, and cleansing to ensure the integrity, consistency, and quality of data used for analysis, visualization, and decision-making.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Required:
  • Expert knowledge of business intelligence tools (PowerBI, Tableau, etc.)
  • Advance knowledge of data analysis programs (SQL, Python, R, etc.).
  • Proficiency in data extraction, transformation, validation, and quality assurance processes.
  • Strong coding experience.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to interact well with other railroad and MTA departments at all levels.
  • Detail oriented with strong quantitative and analytical skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize workload while adhering to deadlines.
  • Ability to analyze complex datasets and translate findings into clear, concise reports, visualizations, and recommendations for technical and non-technical audiences.


The following is/are preferred:
  • Knowledge of railroad operations and intermodal/connecting service transit operations.
  • Knowledge of ridership analysis and service planning.
  • Familiarity with the New York Metropolitan region and its typical travel patterns.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor's Degree in Arts/Sciences (BA/BS) in Transportation Planning, Data Analytics, Statistics, Computer Science, Business Administration or directly related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in transportation planning, ridership analysis, business intelligence, data analytics, service planning, operations analysis, or a related field. Demonstrated equivalent experience, education, and/or technical credentials to include (4) four additional years of related experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience managing professional staff/diverse workforce and/or operating projects.

  • Final salary is determined experience, skillset, and alignment with compensation practices. The posted range reflects expected compensation and may be updated as market or business needs evolve.
  • To be eligible for consideration for a new role, current MTA employees must complete at least one year of service in their current role prior to applying. Additionally, eligibility to interview is contingent upon maintaining a satisfactory record of job performance, attendance, and disciplinary conduct.
