Job Summary

Develops and executes enterprise-wide and business specific pharmacy and healthcare specific compliance strategies, focusing on the areas with greatest risk to the company. Collaboration with internal and external resources to develop strategies that meet department goals within budget and established timelines. Provides broad scale compliance expertise to business teams and works with all levels in the Walgreens Compliance Department, Legal Department, and other functional areas.

Job Responsibilities
  • Leads a comprehensive approach to identify healthcare compliance issues and executes compliance activities that evaluate and provide assurance to management that objectives are being met. Identifies and implements strategies to resolve problems or barriers that could hinder successful execution of healthcare compliance activities.
  • Serving as a standing or ad hoc member of business or leadership teams, provides compliance input and expertise into business decisions, including the development of solutions-oriented risk mitigation strategies.
  • Engages business segment leaders in the healthcare compliance process to ensure strategic objectives are well understood in order to deliver anticipated results.
  • Provides day-to-day compliance expertise to healthcare business areas and remains abreast of activities implicating healthcare compliance. Identifies potential areas of healthcare compliance vulnerability and risk and provides guidance on how to avoid or deal with similar situations in the future
  • Reviews business materials requiring compliance input and advising internal partners and stakeholders on compliant strategies, plans and tactics
  • Identifies specific compliance risk areas to incorporate into the company compliance plan
  • Collaborate with business segment leaders in the healthcare compliance process to ensure strategic objectives are met
  • Establishes and maintains relationships and networks with departments that interact with the Compliance Department. Works collaboratively with members of the Compliance Department, the Legal Department, and other functional areas within the Company to ensure that appropriate actions are taken to implement strategic and operational initiatives.
  • Actively identifies, monitors and remediates issues and provides independent review and evaluation to ensure healthcare compliance issues/concerns within the organization are appropriately resolved.
  • Supports and manages compliance investigations regarding allegations of compliance and/or ethical policy deviations and manages completion of the resulting corrective action plans, as needed.
  • Monitors execution of corrective actions to drive compliance within organization.
  • Proactively identifiy specific compliance risk areas to incorporate into the company compliance plan. Supports annual Risk Assessment activities.
  • Proactively identify, monitor and remediate individual issues while providing independent review and evaluation to ensure healthcare compliance issues/concerns within the organization are appropriately resolved
  • Manage, facilitate, track and report on the completion of all corrective actions related to pharmacy and healthcare services. Working with the CMA team, monitors the execution of corrective actions to drive compliance across enterprise.
  • One View and Investigations - align priorities working with Compliance Monitoring and Analytics and Compliance Investigations Teams based on trends and investigations and other functional areas within the Company
  • Partners with functional areas as needed to enhance policies and system controls. Develops reports, projects, and assessment tools to verify compliance.
  • Where applicable, manages outside vendors to ensure on-time, on-target and within-budget deliverables
  • Partner with other internal compliance team members on projects that would include, regulatory compliance matters, compliance investigations, privacy matters and compliance monitoring efforts.
  • Stays abreast of industry leading best practices and brings them to the attention of the leadership team for innovative application. Develops and leverages partnerships (and relationships) with internal and external stakeholders to meet business needs.
  • Provides proactive compliance support related to Fraud, Waste & Abuse (e.g., civil Monetary Penalties, Anti-Kickback Statute, Stark Law, False Claims Act, government billing and reimbursement, and appropriate interactions with patients, HCPs, HCOs, payers and pharmaceutical manufactures.


External Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 4 years of experience in compliance or related fields (e.g., regulatory, audit, legal) OR a High School Diploma/GED and at least 7 years of experience in compliance or related fields (e.g., regulatory, operations, legal).
  • Experience working with federal and state healthcare regulatory laws, including Anti-kickback, Stark, Civil Monetary Penalties, and False Claims Act.
  • Experience evaluating and implementing the elements of an effective ethics and compliance program.
  • Experience evaluating information to determine compliance with standards, laws, and regulations.
  • Experience establishing and maintaining long-term relationships with senior management and individuals at all other levels of the organization and interacting with diplomacy and tact.
  • Experience leading change efforts through effective communication and persuasion.
  • Experience diagnosing legal and compliance issues and presenting solutions and alternatives for management.
  • Experience managing multiple large scale projects concurrently
  • Experience communicating effectively to all levels and across functions of the organization
  • Experience delivering actionable insights in a complex, matrixed organization
  • At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
  • At least 2 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
  • Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).


Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a complex, matrixed organization.
  • Juris Doctorate, Masters, PharmD and/or Compliance Certification (e.g., CCEP, CHC)
  • Experience in the Healthcare or Pharmaceutical industry
