Summary/Job Scope:

The Senior Maintenance Manager is responsible for providing leadership, strategic direction, and functional oversight for all maintenance functions including oversight of mechanical maintenance, electrical maintenance, and reliability activities. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and cost-effective performance of plant assets while supporting production, operational excellence, and continuous improvement objectives. The incumbent leads maintenance teams, oversees asset management and shutdown planning, and drives initiatives that improve equipment reliability, plant availability, and overall operational performance in compliance with all safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership, People Development & Organizational Effectiveness
  • Provide strategic leadership to the maintenance organization by establishing and communicating goals, objectives, and expectations aligned with company values, plant priorities, and business objectives.
  • Lead, coach, mentor, and support maintenance leaders and teams to drive performance, accountability, engagement, and continuous improvement.
  • Establish a culture of operational excellence by enabling leaders with the resources, tools, and support necessary to achieve departmental goals and develop their teams.
  • Promote workforce capability development through training programs, competency management, knowledge transfer, and succession planning initiatives.
  • Regularly evaluate organizational performance and effectiveness, working with direct reports to address gaps, remove barriers, and implement sustainable improvement strategies.


Financial Management & Budget Accountability
  • Develop, manage, and monitor the annual maintenance operating and capital budgets in collaboration with the Mechanical Maintenance Manager, Electrical Maintenance Manager, and Reliability Manager.
  • Review financial performance, key performance indicators, and maintenance expenditures regularly to ensure budget compliance and identify opportunities for cost optimization.
  • Provide regular reporting and performance summaries to plant leadership regarding budget performance, maintenance costs, and resource utilization.
  • Review and approve requisitions for maintenance services, materials, equipment, and spare parts in alignment with approved budgets and operational requirements.
  • Lead the governance of maintenance spending to ensure cost discipline while supporting reliability, safety, environmental, and operational objectives.


Maintenance Strategy, Reliability & Asset Management
  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve asset management and maintenance programs, including predictive, preventive, lubrication, and reliability-based maintenance systems.
  • Provide governance and oversight of reliability strategies, mechanical maintenance execution, and electrical maintenance programs through direct reports.
  • Ensure maintenance systems support operational excellence, equipment reliability, and ISO certification requirements.
  • Lead the ongoing development of the plant's reliability framework, ensuring effective downtime analysis, root cause investigations, and corrective action processes.
  • Drive long-term reliability improvements through data-driven decision making, performance analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Review equipment performance trends and maintenance effectiveness to identify opportunities for increased asset availability and reduced maintenance costs.


Shutdowns, Capital Projects & Continuous Improvement
  • Lead the planning and execution of major shutdowns, annual outages, and turnaround activities to ensure safe, efficient, and timely completion.
  • Participate in the development of capital budgets and support the evaluation, prioritization, and implementation of strategic capital investments.
  • Collaborate with operations and engineering teams to identify and implement initiatives that improve production efficiency, equipment performance, and overall plant effectiveness.
  • Recommend and support process, equipment, and maintenance improvements that enhance reliability, productivity, and operational performance.


Maintenance Planning, Work Management & Operational Excellence
  • Provide oversight of maintenance planning, scheduling, and work management processes to ensure maintenance work is effectively prioritized, documented, and executed.
  • Ensure maintenance procedures, work orders, and associated documentation are properly established, controlled, and maintained by responsible teams.
  • Govern maintenance housekeeping standards, safety-critical work priorities, and backlog management processes to support plant safety and operational objectives.
  • Foster strong collaboration between maintenance and production teams to ensure alignment on plant priorities, reliability objectives, and operational performance targets.


Health, Safety & Environmental Leadership
  • Champion a strong safety culture by promoting safe work practices and ensuring active participation in plant safety programs and initiatives.
  • Ensure maintenance personnel comply with all applicable health, safety, environmental, and company regulatory requirements.
  • Integrate environmental stewardship considerations into all maintenance activities and decision-making processes.
  • Foster employee engagement in safety, environmental, and continuous improvement initiatives to support a safe and sustainable workplace.
  • Ensure maintenance department compliance with applicable management systems and standards, including ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and ISO 50001, through effective governance, accountability, and performance monitoring.

Qualifications:

Education and/or Designations:
  • University degree or college diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Experience:
  • Minimum 8-10 years of mechanical maintenance experience in a heavy industrial environment, cement, mining, steel, aggregates, or similar.
  • Proven leadership experience managing maintenance teams in a unionized environment.
  • Demonstrated experience in reliability engineering, asset management, and maintenance best practices.
  • Experience supporting shutdowns, major outages, and lifecycle asset planning.


Skills:
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems and industrial equipment.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and labour relations skills.
  • Solid understanding of Ontario OHSA and industrial safety regulations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and CMMS (e.g., SAP PM, Maximo, or equivalent).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Budget management and cost control expertise.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced industrial environment.


Work Environment:
  • Industrial manufacturing environment with exposure to noise, dust, heat, and heavy equipment.
  • Physical effort for this role has been rated Moderate-Intermediate (meaning physical activity (e.g. standing, walking, working in an awkward or constrained physical position or confined/restricted space) can be up to 50% of the workday.
  • May require overtime or off-hours work during shutdowns or emergency situations.
  • On-site presence required.

Salary Range: $143,397.00 - $200,000.00

(offers will be based on qualifications, experience and education, which will determine where a candidate will fall in line with the above wage range)
