Senior Mainframe Infrastructure Engineer
Overview / Summary The Senior Mainframe Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for designing, operating, and maintaining enterprise server infrastructure, including specialty mainframe systems, high-performance computing systems, and hybrid and cloud environments. The role supports internal customer needs through infrastructure design, hardware configuration, virtualization, monitoring, capacity planning, maintenance, and cross-functional project coordination.
Key Responsibilities - Design, operate, and maintain enterprise servers, including IBM mainframe systems, high-performance computing systems, and general-purpose hybrid and cloud systems.
- Research, design, implement, and maintain complex infrastructure solutions for internal customer needs, including specialty software, data warehouses, identity access management, event frameworks, containerization, and on-demand scaling.
- Design and configure secure virtualized environments consisting of virtual machines, virtual networks, and high-speed and distributed storage systems.
- Define and maintain zSeries hardware components using IBM Hardware Configuration Manager (HCM), Connectivity Mapping Tool (CMT), and Hardware Configuration Definition (HCD).
- Analyze and determine hardware configurations to distribute I/O across mainframes, storage systems, data centers, and network environments.
- Program Cisco FICON switches and mainframe IOGENs to support mainframe resources and environments.
- Design, install, and maintain mainframe cable infrastructure, including cabling hardware into fiber networks.
- Coordinate and plan hardware installations and de-installations, including assembling and managing installation and de-installation teams.
- Coordinate and plan hardware microcode upgrades.
- Monitor, track, and diagnose hardware failures across mainframe computer systems and peripheral devices.
- Provide prompt problem determination and implement corrective action in response to hardware failures.
- Schedule and supervise hardware maintenance activities.
- Supervise hardware suppliers during equipment installation.
- Provide weekend, evening, and on-call 24x7x365 support for hardware failures and configuration launches.
- Coordinate hardware activities with Network, Operations, Facilities, Storage, and Software teams.
- Monitor resources such as CPU, memory, storage, and network traffic to ensure effective utilization and identify potential cost concerns.
- Resolve infrastructure bottlenecks and plan for future capacity needs based on resource usage trends.
- Coordinate changes with storage and software teams when planning and implementing new hardware and configurations.
- Participate in facility planning and data center transition and consolidation efforts.
- Participate in Disaster Recovery planning and testing and serve as a technical liaison for equipment installations related to Disaster Recovery or consolidation.
- Lead cross-functional teams and drive results on mainframe hardware projects.
- Utilize existing tools or assist in engineering custom monitoring solutions to ensure systems are configured correctly, operate efficiently, and remain secure.
Required Qualifications - 10+ years of IT experience.
- 8+ years of development experience.
- Practical experience in two coding languages or advanced practical experience in one coding language.
- Associate degree.
