Full Job Description
ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY

onX is seeking a SeniorLegal Counsel to help scale our legal function as the business continues to grow in complexity across products, partnerships, data, and regulatory environments.

Today, our legal team partners across the business on a broad range of strategic and operational initiatives, supporting everything from commercial partnerships and product development to privacy, regulatory matters, and litigation. As onX continues to grow, we're expanding our attorney-level capacity to help advance increasingly complex legal matters, support new company-wide opportunities, and enable Legal to partner even more proactively with the business.

This role is designed to be more than a traditional legal reviewer. You will operate as an embedded business partner, building trusted relationships across the company and helping teams navigate ambiguity, assess risk, and move important work forward. You will partner closely with stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Partnerships, CX, Finance, and Operations to translate legal considerations into practical business decisions. The primary focus of this role is providing legal judgment, guidance, and execution across a wide range of business-critical matters.

We believe technology, including AI, will continue to improve how legal work gets done. While this is not a legal operations or AI-focused role, we are looking for someone who is curious about new tools and who strategically incorporates them into the team's work to improve judgment, quality, speed, and effectiveness. This role reports to the Lead Sr. Legal Counsel.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
Essential Job Duties & Functions

  1. Complex Commercial & Strategic Legal Work - Partner with business leaders to structure, negotiate, and execute complex legal agreements that support company objectives while appropriately managing risk.
    • Review, draft, redline, and negotiate complex commercial, vendor, software, marketing, licensing, and partnership agreements
    • Support strategic partnership implementations and cross-functional initiatives
    • Advise stakeholders on contractual structure, risk allocation, and negotiation strategy
    • Apply legal judgment within established company policies, contract standards, fallback positions, and risk tolerances while independently advising stakeholders and moving matters toward resolution.
    • Help manage legal escalations and novel issues that fall outside established workflows
    • Coordinate with outside counsel when specialized expertise is required
  2. Product, Privacy & Regulatory Guidance - Provide practical legal guidance that helps teams build, launch, and operate products responsibly and compliantly.
    • Advise on privacy, data use, subscription, consumer protection, and technology-related legal questions
    • Help establish repeatable approaches for legal research, regulatory monitoring, issue triage, and knowledge sharing to improve proactive legal support across the business.
    • Assess legal implications of new product features, workflows, and business initiatives
    • Monitor developments in privacy, product, subscription, and technology regulation
    • Translate legal and regulatory developments into actionable recommendations
    • Identify emerging risks and recommend pragmatic mitigation approaches
  3. Litigation, Discovery & Special Projects - Support the organization through legal matters that require attorney-level judgment, coordination, and execution.
    • Assist with litigation support, discovery efforts, and coordination across internal stakeholders
    • Support diligence activities, investigations, and other legal projects as they arise
    • Partner with outside counsel and internal teams to gather, organize, and analyze information
    • Help the business navigate unexpected legal issues that require thoughtful and timely responses
  4. Embedded Business Partnership - Serve as a trusted advisor to teams across the company by helping them navigate legal considerations early and effectively.
    • Partner with Product, Engineering, CX, Partnerships, Marketing, and Operations teams on business initiatives
    • Translate complex legal concepts into clear, actionable business guidance
    • Balance risk management with business objectives and operational realities
    • Build strong relationships that position Legal as an enabling function and trusted partner
    • Help teams understand legal considerations early, before issues become obstacles
  5. Operational Excellence & Legal Workflow Improvement - Help improve how legal work is delivered as the business continues to scale.
    • Identify opportunities to improve legal workflows and reduce unnecessary manual effort
    • Contribute to scalable processes, templates, documentation, and internal guidance that increase consistency and efficiency
    • Partner with Legal Operations and team members to improve how legal support is delivered across the organization
    • Leverage technology and AI tools where appropriate to improve efficiency, research, drafting, and knowledge management
    • Share ideas and best practices that help the legal team continue to evolve as the business grows
WHAT YOU'LL BRING

  • Legal Judgment: Demonstrated ability to independently manage complex legal matters, assess legal risk, and translate that risk into practical, business-oriented guidance with limited supervision.
  • Trusted Partnership: Ability to build trust and credibility with stakeholders across technical and non-technical functions through clear communication, sound judgment, and a collaborative approach.
  • Execution & Prioritization: Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage competing demands, shifting priorities, and multiple workstreams effectively.
  • Pragmatic Decision-Making: Solutions-oriented approach that balances legal risk with business objectives while helping teams move work forward.
  • Continuous Improvement: Growth mindset and curiosity about better ways of working, including thoughtful use of emerging technologies such as AI, to improve quality, efficiency, and team effectiveness.
  • A shared passion for and ability to demonstrate onX's Company Values.
