Full Job Description
Project Location: Approx. 110km southwest of Dease Lake, BC / 700km north of Vancouver, BC

Work Environment: Hybrid in Smithers, BC or Vancouver, BC, with regional travel (NW BC).

Standard Schedule: 7.5 hours daily (M-F), additional hours as required

Compensation: $137,000 - $170,000 + additional cash incentives

Pay Structure: Salaried

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Manager, Contracts and Procurement, the Senior Lead, Contracts will lead full-lifecycle contract management and the ongoing development of contracting processes, templates and tools. This position will collaborate with risk and insurance specialists, external legal counsel, commercial professionals and GCMC teams to develop, recommend and implement contracting and procurement strategies that advance project and business objectives. The role requires contract formation, negotiation and post-award commercial management, beyond purchasing alone.

The position will be a hybrid work arrangement (3 days in-office / 2 days remote) from either the Vancouver or Smithers, BC office. Although the position is office-based, there will be occasional travel throughout various Northern communities, including to those of our Indigenous partners and COIs (Communities of Interest). Time at the Galore Creek Project is also an expectation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure GCMC's commitment to excellence by recognizing our core values of health and safety, people, responsible development, continuous improvement and innovation, and integrity.
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary project teams to develop, recommend and implement contracting and procurement strategies that support development options, consultant studies and field programs.
  • Lead the Request for Proposal (RFP) process, prepare RFP documents, evaluate commercial proposals, coordinate technical evaluations, support best-value selection and negotiate commercial and legal terms with appropriate counsel.
  • Lead contract finalization, approvals, and post-award administration with Project Management, Project Controls and scope owners. This involves facilitating contract initiation meetings, pre-mobilization reviews, invoice reconciliation, contractor performance monitoring and progress updates, change negotiation and implementation, and closeout, while ensuring to maintain complete contract records.
  • Advise scope owners and project leaders on legal and commercial terms, contractual obligations and risk; proactively resolve issues, disputes and claims with contractors and project teams, involving legal counsel as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with risk and insurance specialists, external legal counsel, commercial professionals and GCMC teams to develop, recommend and implement contracting and procurement strategies that advance project and business objectives.
  • Communicate and reinforce contracting and procurement policies, delegation of authority and change management requirements; monitor contractor and consultant compliance with relevant contractual, policy and project requirements and industry best practices.
  • Prepare contract and procurement management plans and reports; identify and escalate commercial risks and impacts on project cost, schedule and scope.
  • Coach and mentor team members and GCMC partners on the contracting process, fostering teamwork and open communication, integrity, constructive feedback and talent development.
  • Build and maintain relationships with the Tahltan Nation and other Indigenous partners, GCMC team members, external service providers and contractors; identify contracting opportunities that strengthen relationships and advance the Project.

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education in business administration, commerce, law, engineering, construction management or other relevant field from an accredited institution is required. A bachelor's degree is preferred.
  • 10+ years of contract lifecycle experience in an owner's team, an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company or an engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) company. Experience must include contract formation, negotiation and post-award administration, including changes, claims and dispute resolution.
  • Large scale mining project (+$1B) experience is preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of contract types, commercial models and contracting strategies, with the ability to interpret and apply legal and commercial terms.
  • Effective communication, facilitation, and interpersonal skills, including the ability to convey complex technical information to diverse audiences.
  • Strong business and strategic judgement, with the ability to understand project and business drivers, identify effective solutions, influence decision-making, and build alignment.
  • Demonstrated negotiation and dispute resolution skills, supported by strong critical and conceptual thinking.
  • Experience across multiple phases of large project execution in industrial engineering and construction, with an understanding of project lifecycles, procedures, roles and responsibilities, and the impacts of contract activities.
  • Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills.
  • Highly motivated and self-directed, with the ability toprioritize work and meet tight deadlines under pressure with minimal guidance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel and Outlook and contract management or document-control systems. Experience with SAP is an asset.
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record and Background Checks.
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License.
  • Legally authorized to work in Canada.
