Salary Range: $181,221 - $235,994/annually
Appointment Type: Permanent Exempt (what does this mean?)
Length of Appointment: PEX not to exceed three (3) years. This position is excluded by the Charter from competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the appointing officer.

As the Senior Executive Director of Capital Planning, you will report to the Head of Operations, be a part of the Operations Division team and lead a division of over 400 employees including custodial, real estate, and capital planning. You will advance portfolio-level analysis, real estate strategy, and facility use policy to support fiscally sustainable use of District assets while maintaining equitable access. This position will also support oversight of Charter Schools operating on District campuses to ensure they are safe, well-maintained, and fiscally aligned with District policies while supporting Board decision-making on renewals.
Essential Duties

As the
Senior Executive Director, Capital Planning, you will:
• Articulate a compelling vision of an inclusive and diverse workforce that values all employees
• Oversee the implementation and coordinate the regular updates of the Facilities Master Plan and Schoolyard Comprehensive Plan
• Outline clear, measurable objectives that align maintenance and operations with Local Control Accountability Program goals on a three-year interregnum
• Create or supervise the creation of operational protocols and policies that impact services to staff and students
• Develop a culture of continuous improvement, excellent customer service, and high standards
• Lead the modernization of Facility Use Permit fee structures under the Civic Center Act to improve transparency, operational efficiency, and cost recovery associated with public use of District facilities.
• Oversee the development of a comprehensive Portfolio Analysis of non-instructional real estate assets to evaluate highest and best use opportunities, develop strategic recommendations for the Board of Education, and lead implementation of approved portfolio optimization strategies.
• Direct the strategic transition of charter school facility use agreements and associated fee structures over a multi-year implementation timeline, ensuring fiscal sustainability, regulatory compliance, and equitable cost allocation across District facilities.
• Set a clear, definable standard of excellence for facilities staff and develop a positive rapport with the broader SFUSD community
• Prepare staffing reports, models and budgets for all reporting departments
• Prepare and present presentations before various public and community groups, the Board of Education
• Oversight and direction of:
• Custodial Department
• Capital Planning
• Real Estate
• Implement a strong talent management strategy from entry to exit
• Provide strategic leadership and oversight to multidisciplinary teams, fostering accountability, collaboration, and operational excellence across facilities, real estate, and support services functions.
• Collaborate with a wide array of internal and external partners
• Work closely with the Bond and Maintenance and Operations Departments to plan capital improvements and ensure successful project handoff
• Foster relationships with philanthropic partners to establish partnerships and endowments
• Provide information and maintain positive working relationships with labor partners
• Deliver professional service with a personal approach to school sites and students. Regularly visit and meet with stakeholders to resolve issues and improve conditions
• Collaborate with other members of the superintendent's cabinet on strategic initiatives
The strongest candidates will have:
• Extensive knowledge of public school district capital planning processes, including facilities master planning, bond program implementation, deferred maintenance strategies, and alignment of capital investments with educational and operational priorities.
• A strong record of driving organizational change and initiating key innovations
• Strong analytic and systems thinking necessary to interpret data to inform goals and strategy, as well as build infrastructure where none exists
• Ability to work effectively across multiple functions and roles within a complex organization
• A proven record of effectively planning, organizing and using resources to take action and achieve goals
• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with executive level district staff and colleagues
• Experience and success with effective written and verbal communication, facilitation and presentations to large groups and a variety of audiences (e.g., staff meetings, executive briefings, public board meetings, memos)
• Strong computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Minimum Qualifications
Education & Experience- Bachelor's degree (B.A. / B.S) from an accredited college or university
- Five (5) years of director-level experience in a large facilities management or other property management setting with multiple sites
• Two (2) years of executive-level management experience
- Strategic leadership and management experience
