The Team:

Upstart's Servicing teams play a critical role in supporting our borrowers throughout the life of their loan. They are responsible for helping ensure every borrower has a smooth, transparent, and empathetic experience-from the moment their loan is funded through final repayment.

Servicing also plays an important role in Upstart's financial performance. By proactively preventing delinquency, managing operational costs, and continuously improving our servicing platform, they help protect both our borrowers and the business. This is where empathy meets execution-and where every interaction is an opportunity to build trust.

As the Senior Engineering Manager at Upstart, you will lead a team of 12+ engineers across two engineering squads, partnering closely with Product, Risk, and Operations to translate business needs into resilient, scalable technical solutions. This role reports to a Senior Director of Engineering and focuses on driving architectural clarity, developing high-performing teams, and building systems that balance speed, reliability, and compliance.

How you'll make an impact
  • Lead and develop multiple engineering teams responsible for critical Servicing products.
  • Define and execute multi-quarter technical and engineering strategies aligned with Servicing and company priorities.
  • Partner with Product and cross-functional leaders to translate borrower and business needs into scalable technical solutions.
  • Drive architectural clarity and justified technical decisioning across complex systems.
  • Build a culture of ownership, execution, collaboration, and operational excellence.
  • Hire, coach, and develop engineers and emerging engineering leaders
  • Establish clear visibility into technical priorities, delivery risks, trade-offs, and roadmap execution.

Minimum Qualifications
  • 10-15 years of software engineering experience, with 4-7 years in engineering management roles.
  • Deep technical expertise in distributed systems, APIs, and systems design.
  • Proven experience leading teams in regulated domains such as fintech, payments, or lending.
  • Demonstrated ability to define and deliver complex technical strategies that align with business goals.
  • Strong track record of building high-performing teams and mentoring engineering leaders.
  • Excellent communication and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience building technology in fintech, lending, payments, servicing, or another regulated environment.
  • 7+ years of engineering management experience.
  • Experience leading both product and platform-oriented engineering teams.
  • Strong product judgment and the ability to connect technical decisions to business outcomes.
  • Experience modernizing or evolving complex technical platforms while continuing to deliver customer-facing features.
  • Experience partnering closely with Product, Design, Operations, Risk, or other business functions.
  • Familiarity with applying AI or automation to customer experiences, internal workflows, or operational systems.

Position location This role is available in the following locations: Remote

Time zone requirements The team operates on the East/West coast time zones.

Travel requirements As a digital first company, the majority of your work can be accomplished remotely. The majority of our employees can live and work anywhere in the U.S but are encouraged to to still spend high quality time in-person collaborating via regular onsites. The in-person sessions' cadence varies depending on the team and role; most teams meet once or twice per quarter for 2-4 consecutive days at a time.

Your actual base pay will depend on your geographic location-with our "digital first" philosophy, Upstart uses compensation regions that vary depending on location. $195,300-$270,400 USD

$182,800-$230,000 CAD
