Full Job Description
About the team/role

As the Senior Engineering Manager for Mortgage, you'll lead 16+ engineers as the head of engineering for Checkr's mortgage business. Reporting to the VP of Engineering with visibility to executive leadership, you'll own the product end to end from APIs and integrations to AI/ML-powered verification decisions and the customer experience. You'll operate as a business leader, not just an engineering leader: partnering with Product to shape strategy, owning the technical roadmap and delivery against growth targets, and building the team and systems needed to serve the country's largest lenders.

We're looking for a hands-on technical leader who has built and scaled high-performing engineering teams and production systems, while staying close to architecture and execution. Experience in mortgage lending or another regulated, high-stakes industry is a plus. The stakes are real: the systems you build directly impact people's ability to get a mortgage, giving you the opportunity to drive meaningful customer and business impact at scale.

What you'll do
  • Own the technical roadmap and architecture for the Mortgage platform and partner with product management to co-own product direction, build new features, and enhance existing ones, decisions here affect millions of consumers a year
  • Own delivery for the Mortgage business line, and partner with the business's leadership as a peer, jointly accountable for the business's results,
  • Set the technical direction for the team, reduce technical debt, and scale the architecture sustainably while maintaining delivery speed, advancing Checkr into the next generation of product offerings
  • Represent engineering in annual strategy planning, including capacity modeling, headcount planning, and prioritization tradeoffs.
  • Manage quality incidents as both technical lead and communication lead
  • Hire and continually raise the bar for engineering talent, and mentor team members in a way that supports their individual career growth
  • Build direct relationships with customers and drive results in partnership with them

What you bring
  • 8+ years as an engineering manager and 12+ years as an engineer overall, including experience managing large teams, in addition to managing managers
  • Experience owning a P&L or business line, including revenue targets, capacity planning, and cross-functional accountability, ideally for products operating at scale in highly regulated environments, with an understanding of the related data, legal, and human impact considerations
  • Deep understanding of service architecture, system design, and lean software development principles, with the ability to make high-level prioritization decisions quickly, balancing technical and business tradeoffs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, able to translate technical strategy into business terms for executives
  • Experience with machine learning and AI, and enthusiasm for working in an AI-native company where AI is embedded across how we build and operate
  • Humility, openness to feedback, and eagerness to learn
  • A-player mindset: a strong bias for action, urgency, resilience through ambiguity, and ownership of outcomes
