At a Glance

Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Senior Embedded Firmware Engineer to join the Pass & Seymour Team in Syracuse, NY.

Lead and participate in the planning and execution of embedded firmware development for lighting controls, advanced protection and connected wiring devices. Design, develop, integrate, and test firmware for resource-constrained microcontrollers used in wiring devices.

Job Duties:
  • Execute the design, development, debugging, and hardware/software integration of embedded firmware solutions for new and existing electrical wiring devices according to product specifications.
  • Actively participate in hardware design by working across firmware and electronics domains, including schematic interpretation, hardware/firmware partitioning, board bring-up, and root-cause debugging of mixed hardware/software issues to ensure optimal wiring-device design.
  • Implement firmware for wiring-device applications, i.e. switches, dimmers, switched receptacles, GFCI's, AFCI's, etc, that interface to low-rate wireless networks (IEEE 802.15.4).
  • Knowledge and experience with integrated tools to plan, develop, test, and deploy software as part of a single workflow. Azure DevOps experience preferred.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive test strategies for embedded firmware and hardware systems, including test plan creation, automated and manual test execution, debugging, and root-cause analysis to verify functionality, reliability, and regulatory compliance across the product lifecycle.
  • Work effectively within cross-functional teams to achieve project objectives by actively communicating, sharing knowledge, and supporting team members to ensure alignment and successful outcomes.
  • Coordinate with Engineering Leadership, Product Management, Design Team Members, and System Engineering to ensure firmware development efforts align with the strategic product development plan and business priorities.


Qualifications

Education: Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree Electrical Engineering or in Computer Science

Experience:
  • Minimum 5+ years of software design and testing experience, working with embedded microprocessor development environments and/or products.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in firmware engineering for new product development.


Required skills to include:
  • Strong proficiency in C programming with hands-on experience developing and debugging firmware for microcontroller-based systems, including a solid understanding of hardware interaction, peripherals, and low-level system behavior.
  • Demonstrated use of Azure DevOps or equivalent with Agile or Kanban processes
  • Demonstrated ability to understand and work directly with Altium design files such as schematic, PCB layout, and PCB assembly drawings. Solid understanding of analog and digital circuit design fundamentals (power, signal integrity, interfaces, sensors/actuators).
  • Experience with wireless systems (e.g., Zigbee / IEEE 802.15.4 or similar).
  • Experience with regulatory or compliance-driven designs (UL, FCC, etc.).
  • Strong MS office-based computer skills, proficient with word processing, spreadsheet and presentation software, e-mail and meeting management software. Ability to use artificial intelligence, internet and web-based resources efficiently and effectively.
  • Ability to communicate orally and written via the English Language is a requirement.

Ability to operate/control electronic equipment locally and remotely via:

- the use serial communications protocols, both long distance (ex. RS-232) and short distance (ex. I²C).

- the use of IP based communications protocols

Ability to effectively present/communicate intended design and project task assignments to team members as well as the ability to communicate summarized project status to Engineering Leadership.

Experience supporting existing production products through firmware maintenance, field issue resolution, root-cause analysis, and implementation of design changes across the product lifecycle.

Ability/Willingness to travel internationally on a limited basis up to 25%.

Salary: $139,500K - $163,700K
