Full Job Description
Job Description Summary
The Electrical Systems Engineer will serve as a technical leader for high-reliability digital power conversion and electric drive systems, spanning architecture, detailed design, verification, and validation of Thermal Management Systems. This role focuses on developing and qualifying TMS control systems, advanced DC/DC conversion hardware and controls for aerospace applications, including high-voltage power conversion, motor drive systems, and associated protection, monitoring, and control circuitry. The systems engineer will drive cross-functional integration across systems, hardware, test, and manufacturing teams, ensuring safe, robust, and compliant solutions that meet customer requirements for safety, quality, delivery, and cost.

While providing Thermal Management Systems requirements support, collaborating with mechanical and systems engineering teams to ensure integrated electrical and thermal solutions for high-reliability aerospace hardware is a paramount function to this position.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities:
  • Own system-level requirements flow-down for digital power conversion hardware, decomposing customer and system requirements into clear, testable hardware and firmware requirements, and ensuring traceability throughout the design lifecycle.
  • Document and communicate design decisions, analyses, and test outcomes through formal reports and technical reviews, ensuring traceability and a strong customer-driven focus.
  • Lead architecture and detailed design of digital power conversion, including DC/DC stages, gate drives, protection circuits, sensing chains, and control electronics, with emphasis on high-voltage and high-power aerospace applications.
  • Plan and execute verification and validation of digital power conversion hardware and systems, including procedure authorship, lab setup, and execution of environmental, functional, and performance tests (e.g., DO160/MIL-STD-461/MIL-STD-704-type conditions, thermal, vibration, electrical stress).
  • Define and validate insulation coordination and HV design rules, including creepage/clearance and high-voltage practices for converters and drive systems operating at several kilovolts, to meet aerospace safety and reliability expectations.
  • Design and Review PCBs and schematics for power stages, gate drivers, control boards, and sensing modules using industry-standard tools (e.g., Mentor Graphics, Altium), collaborating with layout, mechanical, and systems teams to ensure robust, manufacturable designs.
  • Lead high-voltage testing and qualification activities, including partial discharge (corona) tests and insulation tests at altitude and ground level, using results to drive design improvements and ensure long-term reliability.
  • Work with AI&T to develop and improve automated test benches and lab infrastructure for digital power testing, including scripting and automation where appropriate, and act as a champion for lab safety, structured test procedures, and safe operation at high voltage and high power.
  • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to early career engineers and peers in power converter design, HV test, and system integration, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, structured problem solving, and respect for people
  • Contribute to proposals, trade studies, and technology roadmaps for TMS control systems, digital power systems, including evaluation of new topologies, devices, and architectures.

Required Minimum Qualifications:
  • Advanced degree (M.S. or Ph.D.) in Electrical Engineering or related discipline with emphasis in power electronics, power conversion, or electric drives.
  • Significant experience (e.g., 15+ years) in electrical engineering and electrical systems engineering with focus on power electronics, digital power conversion, and/or electric drive systems, and controls hardware for aerospace or similarly demanding applications.
  • Proven experience leading the design, verification, and validation of power conversion hardware (DC/DC, AC/DC, DC/AC) and associated control electronics.
  • Experience with high-voltage systems, insulation coordination, and HV testing and qualification activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across cross-functional technical teams and manage technical scope, schedule, and risk.

Desired Characteristics & Experience:
  • Strong background in electrical systems engineering, requirements decomposition, and PCB/schematic design for power and control boards (gate drivers, sensors, DSP/control boards, HVDC filters, EMI filters), including DO160/MIL-STD-461/MIL-STD-704-aware design practices and integration with system-level requirements.
  • Demonstrated technical leadership in complex aerospace programs and coordination of cross-functional teams, with clear alignment to GE Aerospace Behaviors (Respect for People, Continuous Improvement, Customer Driven).
  • Familiarity with modeling and simulation tools for power electronics (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, LTSpice, PSIM, PSCAD) and experience using them to guide design and test.
  • Proficient use of IBM DOORS and familiarity with MBSE tools
  • Familiarity with JIRA and Confluence
  • Experience designing and validating high-voltage, high-power conversion systems (e.g., up to several kilovolts) for aerospace, including insulation coordination and partial discharge considerations.
  • Hands-on HV lab experience, including oscilloscopes, power analyzers, HV test setups, and automated test benches, with a demonstrated commitment to lab safety and structured test procedures.

Additional Information:
  • Up to 10% travel is required.
