Full Job Description
The Detroit office of SmithGroup is looking for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our team.

Working with us, you will:
  • Independently provide the full range of electrical engineering services on projects and lead others in accomplishing project objectives given by a supervisor.
  • Lead and perform analysis, design and documentation of medium and large building electrical systems including power distribution, lighting design and fire alarm systems.
  • Effectively manage timelines and workflows of multiple complex projects assigned by supervisor.
  • Engage with Studio Leaders, Marketing, Business Development and other disciplines to effectively market our services including involvement in the preparation of qualification and proposal packages, interview materials and technical proposals as well as participate in thought leadership opportunities.
  • Serve as electrical systems specialist, conduct research in problem areas of considerable scope/complexity and devise solutions.
  • Create and develop planning and design concepts for complex projects in higher education, science and technology, mission critical and healthcare markets.
  • Oversee a design work of others and conduct quality control reviews to ensure an innovative, integrated and cohesive design.
  • Present engineering design solutions to client representative and/or design review committees.
  • Meet with clients, project teams, code officials, contractors and others to address electrical discipline issues and to develop effective working relationships.
  • Mentor junior level staff and participate in performance coaching.
  • Participate in the recruitment and interviewing process as requested.


An ideal candidate has:
  • A bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Architectural Engineering or equivalent.
  • Minimum 15 years of experience working as an electrical engineer in the building design and construction industry, including the design of power distribution, lighting, and lighting controls
  • Prior experience leading electrical teams.
  • Engineer of record experience for medium and large higher education, science and technology, mission critical and healthcare building electrical system designs.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration required.
  • LEED AP preferred.
  • Proficiency in current design software (CAD, Revit, SKM, etc.) as well as Bluebeam Revu and Microsoft Office.
