Full Job Description

Senior Electrical Engineer, NPI

The selected candidate will join the PacBio Instrument Engineering team as an NPI Electrical Engineer. This role will focus on the introduction of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs), cable assemblies, and related electrical hardware for DNA sequencing instruments.

The engineer will work closely with Electrical Design Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and external manufacturing partners to support products from prototype development through pilot production and manufacturing ramp. The position combines hands-on electrical engineering, production test development, troubleshooting, documentation, and manufacturing support.

Responsibilities

  • Support electrical NPI activities from concept and prototype development through pilot builds, product transfer, and production ramp.
  • Collaborate with electrical design engineers to transition PCBAs, cable assemblies, and related electrical hardware into manufacturing.
  • Design, build, validate, and document electrical test fixtures for production subassemblies and instrument-level testing.
  • Develop schematics and PCB layouts for production test fixture electronics.
  • Perform hands-on PCBA bring-up, electrical testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Develop and maintain production test requirements, test procedures, acceptance criteria, and troubleshooting documentation.
  • Participate in design reviews and provide design-for-manufacturing and design-for-test feedback.
  • Support the development and release of cable drawings, wiring diagrams, pinout documentation, bills of materials, and assembly instructions.
  • Work with internal manufacturing teams, contract manufacturers, and suppliers to resolve electrical and test-related issues during prototype and production builds.
  • Analyze production test results, failure trends, and yield data to identify opportunities for improved product quality and manufacturing efficiency.
  • Support engineering change orders and maintain product documentation in PDM and PLM systems.
  • Assist with the qualification of manufacturing processes, test equipment, and electrical suppliers.
  • Support the transfer of products from R&D to manufacturing, including the preparation of assembly and test methods and the training of manufacturing personnel.
  • Coordinate assigned activities with cross-functional teams to meet project schedules, technical requirements, and quality objectives.
  • Communicate technical findings, risks, and recommendations clearly to engineering and project stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
  • Typically requires a minimum of 5 or more years of relevant industry experience.
  • Experience with PCBA design, bring-up, testing, or troubleshooting.
  • Experience designing electrical test fixtures or production test equipment.
  • Proficiency with schematic capture and PCB layout tools; experience with Cadence or Altium is preferred.
  • Working knowledge of common electrical laboratory equipment, including oscilloscopes, digital multimeters, power supplies, and logic analyzers.
  • Understanding of electrical manufacturing processes and design-for-manufacturing and design-for-test principles.
  • Experience creating and maintaining engineering documentation such as schematics, bills of materials, test procedures, cable drawings, and work instructions.
  • Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple technical assignments and changing priorities in a fast-paced product-development environment.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary engineering and operations teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting new product introduction or manufacturing transfer of complex electrical or electromechanical products.
  • Experience with PCBA contract manufacturers, cable assembly suppliers, or outsourced manufacturing partners.
  • Experience developing, deploying, or supporting production test stations at a contract manufacturer.
  • Hands-on electromechanical assembly and system-level debug experience.
  • Experience with PDM or PLM systems and formal engineering change-control processes.
  • Familiarity with FPGA-based systems, embedded electronics, or digital communication interfaces.
  • Familiarity with electrical safety, EMC, product qualification, and reliability testing.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, OneDrive, Teams, and project-management tools.

Candidates must have current authorization to work in the United States without the need for present or future sponsorship.

This role is required to be 100% onsite.
