Overview

NV5 is currently seeking a Senior-Level Electrical Engineer for in the Arlington, Virginia office to lead and support a diverse range of building and infrastructure projects. The successful candidate will be self-motivated with an understanding of building MEP systems design, operation, commissioning, and construction.  The ideal candidate will bring over a decade of hands-on experience in electrical systems commissioning and construction oversight across various facility types, owner groups, and project scales—from small commercial buildings to complex institutional and government facilities.

Responsibilities

Work with other Senior Commissioning Engineers and Project Managers (PM) for technical review and guidance and assist in the development and mentorship of Junior Commissioning Engineers. Using prescribed methods, and/or working from standard documents, perform specific and daily assignments. Apply standard practices and techniques in situations, adjusts and gathers data, and follows operations through a series of related steps or processes, including, but not limited to:

  • Lead commissioning efforts for electrical systems, including power distribution, emergency power, lighting, fire alarm, and controls across a wide variety of project types.
  • Oversee and execute functional performance testing, construction observations, and system diagnostics for electrical, mechanical, life safety, and integrated systems.
  • Manage and deliver electrical engineering and energy consulting services for clients in commercial, institutional, industrial, and government sectors, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with project requirements.
  • Serve as a technical authority and project manager on multiple concurrent projects, maintaining scope, budget, and schedule alignment.
  • Collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams to resolve complex technical issues and ensure successful project outcomes.
  • Support business development initiatives through client engagement, proposal development, and strategic planning.
  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to internal knowledge sharing and process improvement.
  • Up to 50% travel may be required for project execution, training, and inter-office collaboration.
  • Maintain effective communication with clients, contractors and other project team members.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred but not required.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in electrical systems commissioning and energy services across a range of building types and project sizes.
  • Proven expertise in troubleshooting and resolving construction and operational challenges in electrical systems.
  • Demonstrated success in managing multidisciplinary projects and teams across various sectors.
  • Deep understanding of building codes, NFPA standards, and industry best practices.
  • Proficiency in electrical system operations, including low and medium voltage distribution, backup power systems, and integrated controls.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present technical information clearly to stakeholders.
  • Advanced proficiency in MS Office Suite; experience with commissioning software is a plus.
  • LEED Accredited Professional and/or CxA certification is a plus.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen and able to obtain and maintain a government security clearance. Prior clearance (e.g., Secret or Top Secret) is a plus.
