Anticipated Duration: One year, with the possibility of a one-year extension
Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Electrical CAD Designer to support the Advanced Light Source Upgrade project at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. This individual will translate engineering concepts and requirements into detailed, manufacturing-ready electrical designs and documentation.

The role requires strong electrical CAD capabilities, experience supporting fabrication and assembly, and the ability to coordinate closely with electrical engineers, mechanical engineers, project managers, and other technical stakeholders. Work is expected to be performed primarily on-site in Berkeley, California.
Key Responsibilities
  • Create and maintain electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, cable drawings, and related electrical CAD models.
  • Develop detailed electrical documentation that supports manufacturing, fabrication, assembly, testing, installation, and commissioning activities.
  • Prepare and maintain bills of materials, wire lists, cable schedules, and assembly documentation.
  • Translate engineering concepts and technical requirements into complete, manufacturable design packages.
  • Review and revise drawings based on engineering feedback, formal design reviews, and approved engineering changes.
  • Coordinate with electrical and mechanical engineering teams to ensure electrical designs integrate correctly with equipment and product assemblies.
  • Participate in design-coordination meetings and technical design reviews.
  • Maintain organized CAD files, component libraries, drawings, and revision-controlled documentation.
  • Manage engineering documentation within Windchill or another Product Lifecycle Management or Product Data Management system.
  • Perform work in accordance with applicable industry codes, engineering standards, project procedures, and internal quality requirements.
  • Protect proprietary, procurement-sensitive, and other controlled project information.
  • Comply with laboratory safety, security, cybersecurity, site-access, and work-control requirements.

Requirements
Required Qualifications
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Drafting and Design, or a related technical discipline; an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience may be considered.
  • At least five years of professional experience producing electrical CAD designs.
  • Proficiency with one or more electrical design platforms, such as AutoCAD Electrical, Autodesk Inventor, KiCad, or comparable software.
  • Demonstrated experience producing manufacturing-ready electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, bills of materials, wire lists, or cable schedules.
  • Experience maintaining revision-controlled engineering documentation in a PLM or PDM environment.
  • Working knowledge of electrical components, schematic development, electrical drafting conventions, and wiring practices.
  • Familiarity with industry standards and codes applicable to electrical design and documentation.
  • Ability to interpret engineering concepts, redlines, specifications, and design-review comments.
  • Strong attention to detail, document organization, and configuration control.
  • Ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary engineering and project teams.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supporting a Department of Energy national laboratory, research institution, particle accelerator, or similarly complex scientific or industrial facility.
  • Experience using Autodesk Inventor for three-dimensional electrical or electromechanical design.
  • Experience integrating electrical designs with mechanical CAD models and assemblies.
  • Experience using Windchill for document, product-data, or configuration management.
  • Experience supporting the fabrication, assembly, installation, testing, or commissioning of complex engineered systems.
