Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the award-winning news organization of the American Chemical Society, is seeking a dedicated
Senior Editor, Content Partnerships to expand the reach and impact of C&EN's journalism through strategic content distribution and publishing partnerships. This role will oversee the editorial strategy, governance, and performance of C&EN content appearing on third-party platforms, ensuring that the right content reaches the right audiences while maintaining the organization's high editorial standards. The role is co-lead on the development and delivery of the portfolio of news and feature stories produced by the content partnership group.
This position combines editorial expertise, content distribution management, and strategic partnership development. The Senior Editor, Content Partnerships will identify and cultivate external publishing relationships, optimize content delivery workflows, analyze performance metrics, and support audience growth initiatives that extend the global reach of C&EN's journalism.
Job Responsibilities- Work effectively with freelance and staff writers, including developing stories of appropriate scope and length, setting deadlines, working through edits, and creating engaging headlines and social trim.
- Support the development of publishing and content sharing agreements, collaborating with the Publisher and the CPG and legal teams
- Monitor partnerships with publications including performance tracking, editorial quality and workflow efficiencies, working closely with colleagues across C&EN and ACS
- Represent C&EN with publication partners, freelance networks and science journalism communities as per the objectives of CPG
- Support the maintenance of an adequate network of contacts and news sources, as well as attend meetings and conferences, to generate story ideas for the above work.
- Ensure freelancers have up-to-date contracts and statements of work.
- Work with freelancers and C&EN's creative team to identify appropriate art for stories.
- Identify and champion opportunities to promote C&EN partnerships via C&EN's homepage, social channels, newsletters, and other means.
- Write or edit other items for C&EN as appropriate. Cover relevant breaking news as appropriate.
- Mentor more junior staff.
Job Qualifications- Typically requires a minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 8 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 5 years of experience; or equivalent work experience.
- Strong knowledge of the scientific publishing landscape with demonstrated success in science journalism.
- Tech savvy with the ability to constantly learn/adapt to new systems and tools.
- Mature communications skills and relationship building savvy sufficient to seek and apply guidance in the performance of the job as well as to engage with C&EN and other staff to coordinate work.
- Continuous learner with the mentality to learn and apply accumulated experience.
- Ability to resolve complex problems independently.
- Financial savvy to understand operational activities in the context of the business.

Special Additional InformationPLEASE NOTE: The Chemical & Engineering News Guild (C&EN Guild), part of the Washington-Baltimore News Guild (Local 32035, was officially formed in early 2026 to represent editorial and operations staff at the publication. This union represents workers at C&EN. The selected candidate for this position will become a member of Local 32035. Terms and conditions of the union contract are being developed via the collective bargaining process. Until that process is complete, standard ACS compensation and benefits programs will apply.
This role can be based in our Columbus, OH or Washington, DC office. ACS employees work a hybrid schedule, consisting of working onsite two days per work week, as decided by functional area. The balance of the week is open to working remotely, though employees are always welcome onsite each day if they choose.
A reasonable rate of compensation for this position is between $100,000 - $120,000 per year.
