Full Job Description
The Senior Director of FP&A for Optum Financial Services is a high-impact finance leadership role supporting one of the most dynamic and strategically important businesses within UnitedHealth Group and Optum. Optum Financial is a growth pillar, playing an increasingly important role in helping to save, pay for, and manage health care expenses. This leader will shape financial strategy, drive disciplined growth, and provide the insights needed to support profitability, investment decisions, and long-term value creation.

This is an exciting opportunity to work at the intersection of health care and financial services, where affordability, access, consumer experience, and financial discipline come together. In this role, you will lead consolidated financial planning and analysis across revenue, operating expenses, cost performance, earnings, long-range planning, rolling forecasts, and monthly business performance. You will partner closely with finance, operations, strategy, product, controllership, and corporate shared service leaders to translate complex business drivers into clear financial insights, executive-ready narratives, and actionable recommendations.

The Senior Director will also support key strategic and corporate finance activities, including quarterly earnings preparation, monthly business reviews, Board of Director materials, investor-related activities, and assigned M&A transactions across Optum Financial Services. This is an opportunity to influence financial strategy at scale, work directly with senior leaders, and help shape the operating cadence for a strategically important growth pillar of UHG.

If you are located in Eden Prairie, MN, you will follow a hybrid schedule with four in-office days per week.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop clear financial narratives, metrics, and recommendations that help senior leaders understand performance, evaluate trade-offs, and make informed business decisions
  • Lead, develop, and inspire a high-performing finance team
  • Partner across finance, operations, strategy, product, and controllership teams to strengthen planning discipline, improve forecast accuracy, and drive accountability for results
  • Analyze complex business drivers, cost trends, revenue dynamics, and operational metrics to identify risks, opportunities, and actions that support profitable growth
  • Provide strategic finance support for executive materials, quarterly earnings, Board reporting, investor-related activities, and selected M&A transactions
  • Foster a collaborative, enterprise-minded leadership style that builds trust, embraces ambiguity, and creates clarity across teams

You'll be rewarded and recognized for your performance in an environment that will challenge you and give you clear direction on what it takes to succeed in your role as well as provide development for other roles you may be interested in.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field
  • MBA, CPA, or other advanced finance, accounting, or business credential
  • 8+ years of progressive finance experience across FP&A, accounting, business finance, strategic finance, or related disciplines
  • 5+ years of people leadership experience, including leading and developing professional finance teams
  • Experience in healthcare, financial services, or another complex, highly regulated industry
  • Proven ability to partner with, influence, and align cross-functional teams in a complex operating environment
  • Proven solid analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to synthesize complex information, draw insights, and translate strategy into clear operating and financial plans
  • Experience developing, executing, and evolving large-scale strategies, capabilities, or transformation initiatives
  • Proven solid working knowledge of financial systems, financial statements, management reporting, and performance metrics

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in investment banking, Big 4 accounting, consulting, corporate development, or a similarly rigorous analytical environment
  • Experience with CRM platforms, including Salesforce or similar tools, and the ability to connect commercial activity to financial performance
  • Proficiency with business intelligence and financial reporting tools such as Power BI, Tableau, Essbase, or similar platforms
  • Proven solid data query, modeling, and automation skills, with the ability to improve reporting efficiency and generate actionable insights
