Full Job Description
This role is a hybrid position. The selected candidate is expected to work on-site at our Las Colinas office a minimum of two (2) days per week, with the remaining days worked remotely. Specific in-office days may be designated based on team needs and business priorities. About the Role: The Senior Director, Category Marketing is responsible for defining and leading category marketing and market strategy for McKesson Health Systems. This leader aligns customer needs, market dynamics, portfolio priorities, and commercialization strategies to strengthen competitive positioning, and advance strategic business objectives. As a leader and subject matter expert, you will be responsible for building the market-focused vision for the portfolio in alignment with product owners and the various go-to-market and customer-facing teams. By synthesizing the tactics and vision of our core business and growth drivers, you will execute the Health Systems strategy internally and externally. In addition, the Senior Director, Category Marketing will lead the MHS Market Strategy process, serving as the connective link between market insights, portfolio strategy, innovation priorities, and commercialization. This leader will establish and facilitate a disciplined approach for identifying, evaluating, and prioritizing the most attractive opportunities for McKesson to develop differentiated solutions that address evolving customer needs, create competitive advantage, and accelerate growth. By leveraging customer insights, market intelligence, competitive assessments, industry trends, and portfolio analysis, this individual will build and maintain a strategic opportunity pipeline that informs investment decisions, solution development priorities, commercialization readiness, and long-term growth strategies in partnership with MHS leadership, CSI, Product, Sales, and Strategy teams. This role is responsible for the development and execution of product category strategies and the MHS Market Strategy process, driving portfolio differentiation, growth opportunity identification, and strategic prioritization to deliver customer value, competitive advantage, and financial growth across current and future solution portfolios. This person will build and maintain relationships with key business unit leaders to design marketing strategies that grow and retain customers. They will have a deep understanding of the healthcare industry, customer pain points, and market trends to inform growth strategies. In this role, you will define category narratives, value positioning, and commercialization priorities that enable Sales to effectively engage customers and advance strategic growth objectives. This leader will ensure sales teams have the insights, messaging, and resources needed to communicate the value of MHS solutions in a clear, differentiated, and customer-focused way.   This leader will monitor data-driven campaign and value proposition performance with the goal of providing product teams with valuable customer and market feedback. This person will report to the Vice President of Strategic Marketing for McKesson Health Systems and, as a member of the leadership team, will influence strategy across all businesses and stakeholders. What You'll Do: Leadership, Team Development & Strategic Influence - Provide leadership to team members, building a culture of growth and collaboration through ongoing coaching and development. - Provide guidance and a point of view on the best strategies to position the solutions and services MHS offers. This leader is expected to be sought out for information and thought leadership and serve as a go-to resource for deep industry knowledge. - Build and develop a team of subject matter experts who represent product and solution categories in the marketplace. - Develop strong partnerships with key stakeholders and executive sponsors across Marketing, Product, Sales, Strategy, CSI, and Corporate Development to ensure alignment between market opportunities, product roadmaps, commercialization priorities, and business objectives. Serve as a strategic advisor to senior leadership on market trends, competitive dynamics, customer needs, portfolio gaps, and future growth opportunities. - Maintain a strong pulse on business needs and objectives. Adjust and deliver with speed and urgency. Provide input to business unit leaders, project stakeholders, and executives to lead, influence, and reach consensus on business plans and strategies. - Clearly communicate category strategy within the organization with the intent of influencing and gaining agreement among key constituents. Market Strategy & Growth Opportunity Leadership - Lead the MHS Market Strategy process, creating a structured and repeatable framework to identify, evaluate, prioritize, and advance growth opportunities that align with business strategy, customer needs, and market dynamics. - Establish and manage a portfolio view of current and future market opportunities, including competitive gaps, unmet customer needs, emerging healthcare trends, adjacent growth opportunities, and solution whitespace. - Facilitate cross-functional market strategy reviews and governance processes to drive alignment on opportunity prioritization, resource allocation, investment recommendations, and commercialization readiness. - Partner with Strategic Insights, Product Management, CSI, Sales, Strategy, and Business Development teams to convert customer and market intelligence into actionable growth strategies and differentiated solution concepts. - Develop evaluation criteria and business cases that assess opportunities based on strategic fit, customer value, market attractiveness, competitive differentiation, financial impact, operational feasibility, and implementation readiness. - Maintain visibility into the opportunity pipeline and provide executive leadership with strategic recommendations regarding future solution development, portfolio expansion, and growth investments. - Identify and articulate market whitespace opportunities that can strengthen McKesson’s position as a strategic partner to health systems and support long-term enterprise growth. - Translate prioritized opportunities into clear recommendations that inform portfolio roadmaps, go-to-market planning, solution development, and executive decision-making. Category Strategy, Portfolio Positioning & Market Execution - Stay up to date on industry news, market research, and intelligence to develop actionable insights that inform marketing strategies, priorities, and decision making. Partner with the strategic insights team to design and refine plans that guide future strategies. - Develop and execute comprehensive marketing strategies aligned with business objectives for the core business and growth drivers. - Develop positioning and target audience strategies for the core business and growth drivers. - Develop tactical plans to execute on strategy and manage projects as needed to deliver intended results. - Become a significant part of the mission to enhance QBR conversations and deliver messages for key decision makers, including C-suite audiences. - Leverage value proposition, key differentiation, and value levers to inform and influence content marketing teams in the development of marketing campaigns that contribute to share-of-wallet growth with customers and elevate value positioning through VBCOGs conversations. - Develop specific marketing plans and activities for specific products or product lines to establish, enhance, or distinguish product placement within the competitive arena. Basic Requirements: - Degree or equivalent experience. Typically requires 13+ years of professional experience and 6+ years of diversified leadership, planning, communication, organization, and people motivation skills (or equivalent experience). - 13+ years of progressive experience in product management, marketing, category management, etc. - Outstanding executive communication, presentation, and storytelling skills, with the ability to translate complex market, portfolio, and business insights into clear strategic recommendations. - Deep expertise in B2B marketing, category strategy, portfolio management, commercialization, and go-to-market planning, with demonstrated success driving growth and market differentiation. - Experience leading market strategy, growth strategy, opportunity assessment, and portfolio planning initiatives using customer insights, market intelligence, competitive analysis, and financial considerations. - Proven ability to influence senior leaders and facilitate strategic decision-making across complex, matrixed organizations, including executive governance, prioritization, and resource allocation processes. - Strong business acumen, critical thinking, and analytical skills, with the ability to identify emerging trends, assess market opportunities, and translate insights into actionable growth strategies. - Experience leading high-performing teams and fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration, inclusion, and continuous development. - Demonstrated ability to lead large-scale strategic initiatives, manage competing priorities, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment. Preferred Skills/Experience: - Healthcare industry experience and knowledge of McKesson products, services, and customer needs preferred. - Experience using AI tools is preferred. - Knowledge of EMR/EHR is preferred.
