Position SummaryWe are looking for a
Senior Developer to join our payments functionality.
Practice Better's Payments team owns the infrastructure that powers Practice Better Payments, our embedded billing, subscriptions, and payment processing platform for tens of thousands of practitioners worldwide - a foundational, revenue-critical part of our platform. In this role, you'll help build out and scale this capability, owning everything from payment processor integration to the customer-facing experience around payments.
You'll collaborate with a cross-functional team (Engineering, Product, Finance, Support, and our Payment Processor) to understand customer and business needs, address technical challenges, and make technology decisions to deliver innovative, high-quality experiences for our practitioners and their clients.
As with all engineering roles at Practice Better, you'll be expected to work alongside AI coding assistants as a force multiplier - using your expertise to guide, review, and refine AI-generated solutions rather than writing every line by hand.
The ideal candidate is a curious, detail-oriented problem solver with genuine interest in (or hands-on experience with) payments and fintech systems - someone who thrives on the nuance of subscription billing, payment reconciliation, and the trust that comes with handling money correctly. You don't wait for direction - you seek it out when you need it and take ownership of outcomes.
Note: Practice Better is a remote-first company with team members across North America. This particular role is currently open to
Canadian-based candidates only, and candidates must be legally entitled to work for any employer in Canada. Practice Better is unable to support sponsorship for work permits or visas at this time.
What You'll Be Doing- Design, build, and scale our payment processor integrations and payments infrastructure - including retries and reconciliation for our products and services
- Help establish architecture, patterns, and best practices for our payments systems
- Build new user-facing features end-to-end, from database models to APIs to UI components
- Leverage agentic AI development tools to accelerate development velocity while ensuring code quality, security, and architectural integrity - especially critical given the sensitivity of payment data
- Investigate payment fraud and disputed-charge incidents, providing input to Legal and Support as needed, and help resolve billing-related customer issues (failed payments, invoicing questions)
- Improve reliability, monitoring, and alerting for payment-critical systems so we can catch and respond to issues before they impact revenue or customers
- Lead incident response - triaging issues in real time, driving them to resolution, and communicating status to stakeholders when something breaks
- Help ensure our payments systems meet PCI-DSS and other relevant compliance standards, working closely with our Information Security & Compliance team
- Work collaboratively with Product, Design, and Finance to translate business requirements into shipped features
- Continuously explore and adopt emerging AI-powered development workflows to improve team productivity
What You Bring- 8+ years of relevant experience in full-stack development in a SaaS B2B, customer-focused environment, with meaningful hands-on experience in payments, billing, or fintech systems
- Direct experience integrating with a payment processor (Stripe strongly preferred) and building embedded payment experiences.
- Working knowledge of payment processing fundamentals: PCI compliance, chargebacks and disputes, reconciliation, and fraud/risk basics
- Demonstrated experience using AI-assisted coding tools (Claude Code, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or equivalent) in your daily development workflow - this is not optional
- Ability to effectively prompt, guide, and critically evaluate AI-generated code to ensure it meets production standards, particularly for systems handling financial data
- Fully capable of taking on substantial features from concept to shipping as a sole engineer
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, with a bias for clarity and action
- Our tools & tech stack:
- .NET, AngularJS/jQuery, Angular, and TypeScript - in-depth .NET / C# skills are a must-have for this position. Angular is preferred but React will also be accepted.
- Stripe (or an equivalent payment processor / billing platform)
- MongoDB, S3, SQS, Lambda - AWS
- Slack
- Claude Code
- Analytical, curious, and adaptable - you seek solutions, not perfection
- Comfortable operating in a fast-moving, growth-stage environment
Bonus Points- Prior experience at a fintech company or on a dedicated payments/billing team at a SaaS company
- Experience with multi-currency support, sales tax/VAT compliance (e.g., Stripe Tax, Avalara), or international payments
- You care deeply about writing clean, efficient, and maintainable code and understand the value of writing tests and documenting to describe and validate your work
- You're excited to grow your technical skills and deepen your understanding of scalable, secure systems in the Health & Wellness industry
