Senior Database Administrator

PayTrace - Remote

The Senior Database Administrator is an essential member of the Technology team, taking ownership of PayTrace's entire database environment, which includes managing and maintaining production and development databases across multiple platforms. This role requires a highly critical thinker capable of making rapid, well-informed, and independent judgments to support PayTrace's business-critical systems.Key responsibilities include provisioning, installation, configuration, operation, maintenance, patching, and general support of database systems. This person will also design and architect innovative database solutions, including modernizing the database infrastructure by migrating from MS SQL server to the AWS RDS environment.

What you'll do:
  • Database Management & Operations:
    • Create and maintain databases and hosts for Production, Development, and various Test environments.
    • Ensure database availability and recoverability meet established Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and guidelines.
    • Rapidly and accurately resolve database issues utilizing all available tools.
    • Continuously monitor and tune database performance. Ensure integrity and availability of all resources, systems, and key processes, including reviewing logs and verifying that scheduled jobs (e.g., backups) are complete.
    • Perform periodic performance reporting to support capacity planning.
    • Available to address production issues which may require evening, overnight, weekend, and holiday work.


  • Architecture & Development Support:
    • Automate system administration with a focus on resource efficiency and scalability.
    • Design, implement and maintain database security based on best practices, company security standards and regulatory compliance.
    • Provide solutions to development teams when proposed architecture does not support technology strategy.
    • Assist developers with designing and tuning database queries and procedures.
    • Understanding of Technology vision, strategy, infrastructure standards, database platforms, programming languages, and observability and monitoring tools.
    • Migrate legacy database structures to support the modernization of the payment processing platform using microservice architecture.
    • Support the Disaster Recovery (DR) strategy and a multi-region active-active setup.
    • Support data pipeline automation to Snowflake.
    • Create and assist users in creating Business Intelligence (BI) reporting.


  • General & Leadership:
    • Provide technical guidance to data stakeholders.
    • Regularly update and review contributions to operational, configuration, and other procedural documentation.
    • Make rapid, well-informed, independent judgments in support of PayTrace's business-critical systems.
    • Perform other tasks as assigned by management such as running various reports for the leadership team and data stakeholders.


What we need from you:
  • Education & Experience:
    • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology/Computer Science or an engineering field.
    • Minimum of 5 years of experience supporting databases in an enterprise environment, with at least half of that time primarily in a PostgreSQL environment.


  • Technical Expertise:
    • Solid knowledge of PostgreSQL version 15.x and MS SQL 1219/2022, with the ability to share that knowledge.
    • Experience supporting a Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) in both Linux and Windows environments.
    • Proven experience with Amazon Web Services (AWS) technologies: Postgres RDS, SQL Server RDS, Aurora RDS and EC2.
    • Experience with Database High Availability / Replication technologies (e.g., AlwaysOn, Postgres HA).
    • Scripting and automation experience.


  • Professional Skills:
    • Experience with troubleshooting problems and formulating resolutions with IT systems and individuals.
    • Ability to interact with a variety of clients in a clear, concise, and professional manner.
    • Solid understanding and working knowledge of the complete systems development and deployment lifecycle.
    • Working knowledge of all facets of systems administration in a large-scale IT operations unit.
    • Ability to make effective decisions in high-pressure situations with limited management escalation.
    • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.


How to stand out (Preferred Skills:
  • Experience with Microsoft / Linux administration.
  • AWS Certification is a plus.
  • Microsoft MCDBA is a plus.


Salary Range: $110,000-$175,000
