Full Job Description
The Role

As a Senior Data Scientist on the Veeva Compass Patient team, you will be a founding data scientist that owns the greenfield design methodologies and models that tackle large scale complex health data issues. An example of opportunities for this role include:

Tackle the unwinding of the "Super Patient" anomaly, a data-merging challenge causing abandonment of high-value clinical transactions. This person will be excited about having complete latitude to pioneer creative, inference-based models-leveraging techniques ranging from token entropy scoring to clinical transaction pattern recognition-to successfully unravel complex identity overlaps and salvage mission-critical data without relying on the raw PHI.

Build a support structure for natural language search interface on top of medical and pharmacy claims data, for users to query data outside of traditional SQL-like query tools. This person will be excited about applying NLP, ML, and AI principles on a large data set and returning accurate, performant results across a variety of health data attributes.

You are excited about statistics and data science at scale on big data and taking billions of records to build algorithms in a computationally efficient and statistically effective manner while being able to keep the business problems we are working to solve in mind. You'll work closely with Product Managers, Data Analysts, and Engineering teams to design and deliver features, including performance measurement, anomaly detection, and quality monitoring.

This is a great opportunity to be at the forefront of innovation and help us solve some of the most challenging problems in healthcare data and analytics.

What You'll Do

    • Apply statistical, machine learning, and data mining techniques to large health data sets to build new products and methodologies
    • Collaborate closely with Product Managers, Analysts, Software Engineers, Data Engineers, and QA to discover and deliver product offerings from prototype to scale, then iterate and enhance
    • Build data science driven approaches to solve "known" core problems to the business, and conduct more broad exploration to uncover the "unknown," and drive new improvement opportunities
    • Explore and find meaning in high volumes of data, identify signals and patterns to identify relationships to infer the universe from imperfect data. Important skills include querying, data cleansing, experiment design, solution assessment, and identifying scaling challenges
    • Rapidly build prototype product solutions, communicate findings, and iterate
    • Draw from prior experience and technical expertise to identify product improvements and inform testing plans; break overall objectives down into underlying problems that can be prioritized and solved

Requirements

    • 4+ years of hands-on data science and statistics experience (or 2+ years with a Ph.D degree), demonstrating increasing responsibility and impact over time, including experience as the point person
    • M.S. or Ph.D. in Applied Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Machine Learning or another quantitative discipline
    • Fluent in Python
    • Experience with healthcare data, including prescription / medical claims data, EHR data, Lab data, Specialty Pharmacy data, copay data
    • Strong analytical skills and curiosity
    • Experience in at least one framework for large datasets (e.g. Spark)
    • Experience working with large quantities of data to develop models that work in a stable, production approach with live data
    • Experience working with engineering to productionalize models including scaling, monitoring, and documentation
    • Comfortable with ambiguity and breaking goals down into tangible and actionable work plans
    • Demonstrated ability to communicate statistical, mathematical, and computational concepts to audiences of varying technical levels
    • Ability to work independently and across internal teams

Nice to Have

    • Experience in life sciences industry
    • Software engineering in a production environment
    • Software engineering in a commercial cloud environment

Perks & Benefits

    • Medical, dental, vision, and basic life insurance
    • Flexible PTO and company paid holidays
    • Retirement programs
    • 1% charitable giving program

Compensation

    • Base pay: $135,000 - $185,000
    • The salary range listed here has been provided to comply with local regulations and represents a potential base salary range for this role. Please note that actual salaries may vary within the range above or below, depending on experience and location. We look at compensation for each individual and base our offer on your unique qualifications, experience, and expected contributions. Work Where It's Best for You

Work Anywhere means you can work in an office or at home on any given day. It's about getting the work done in the way and place that works best for each person. This applies across all locations and departments.

Work Anywhere does not mean work at any time. We have predictable core hours where employees are generally available for meetings and collaboration. Employees are focused and available during core hours.

We invest in our offices to make them places where our employees like to go. If you work in the office three or more days a week, you will have a dedicated office workspace. Our offices function as hubs to draw people in, create social bonds, and where random connections and mixing of ideas happen. We're investing more in offices, culture, and offsite meetings, not less.

Product teams are organized in regional product hubs for optimal collaboration and live within a time zone of their hub. Our current product hubs are located in Pleasanton, Columbus, Boston, Kansas City, New York City, Raleigh, and Toronto. We create opportunities for teams to get together in person regularly.

Customer-facing roles, such as Sales and Professional Services, live near and/or travel to their customers.

When an employee moves within a country it does not cause a change in salary. Where you live impacts you and your family. Not knowing if your compensation will change if you move can cause stress and uncertainty for everyone. We wanted to eliminate that.

Work at Veeva. Work where it's best for you.
