Overview of role:
The Revenue Analytics team provides business intelligence analytics and reporting solutions for the Revenue Management & Pricing department within WestJet. Transforming data into meaningful information is an art form that requires the combination of technical skills and business acumen. In Revenue Analytics, we approach information from the perspective of the business user, creating and developing accurate and reliable solutions that speak to both Executive and front-line audiences. The Revenue Analytics team is rapidly evolving the intelligent landscape of WestJet - implementing creative ideas to capture efficiencies and promote cutting edge analytics.
Reporting to the Manager of Revenue Analytics, The Senior Data Engineer will provide technical ownership and advisory leadership for data capabilities, ensuring solutions are scalable, reliable, and aligned with future business needs. The role will partner closely with stakeholders to understand business requirements, translate them into effective technical solutions, and provide guidance on architecture, data quality, modernization, and technical trade-offs. You will help build a grassroots analytics function and actively participate in the conceptualization, development, integration, and troubleshooting of new and existing analyses, tools, and reports - ensuring these solutions land with both Executive audiences and front-line Revenue Management & Pricing Analysts. You are an integral part of the growth of our airline as you ensure a consistent understanding, communication of, and approach to meeting strategic goals.
Key deliverables include:- Lead data architecture, modeling, and integration solutions that support current and future business needs
- Lead data projects from planning through delivery, working closely with stakeholders to manage priorities, dependencies, and timelines
- Design and develop scalable, reliable cloud-based data solutions and pipelines using established data engineering standards and practices
- Develop and maintain data quality, validation, reconciliation, and monitoring processes to ensure data accuracy and reliability
- Optimize data solutions and pipelines for performance, scalability, and cost efficiency
- Troubleshoot complex data issues, identify root causes, and implement sustainable solutions
- Provide ongoing operational support for critical data solutions, ensuring timely resolution of issues and minimal disruption to business operations
- Apply data governance, security, and access standards to ensure data is managed appropriately and responsibly
- Develop and maintain comprehensive technical documentation for data solutions, pipelines, architecture, processes, and operational procedures
- Lead workshops, presentations, and training to share technical expertise and strengthen data engineering capabilities across the team
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to team members, promoting consistent engineering practices and knowledge sharing
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly and translate business needs into practical data solutions
- Build strong relationships with stakeholders and effectively communicate technical considerations, risks, and trade-offs
- Ensure data solutions are secure, reliable, maintainable, and aligned with enterprise standards
Experience and qualifications:- Degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Systems, Information Security, or a related field, with 8+ years of relevant experience preferred, or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
- 6+ years of experience working in large-scale data warehouse environments, including project-based data development
- 5+ years of hands-on experience in SQL development, including advanced SQL, window functions, query optimization, and performance tuning
- Strong proficiency in Snowflake, SQL, Python, and scripting, with experience developing scalable data solutions and pipelines
- Strong experience with data warehouse architecture, dimensional modeling, data analysis, and data integration
- Experience with ETL/ELT frameworks, data warehouse automation, and batch and real-time data processing
- Experience working with cloud-based data platforms and services, such as Snowflake, Azure, or similar technologies
- Experience with data ingestion, custom file formats, ingestion monitoring, and data quality controls
- Strong understanding of database management systems, OLAP, data architecture, and DevSecOps practices
- Experience developing meaningful, repeatable, and consistent data quality and validation checks
- Strong analytical, critical-thinking, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex data issues and identify root causes
- Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business language and work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Highly motivated, organized, and autonomous, with the ability to collaborate cross-functionally and lead projects and deliverables
- Strong project and time-management skills, with demonstrated ability to manage priorities, dependencies, and timelines
- Experience providing technical guidance, mentoring, and knowledge sharing to team members
Nice to have:- Experience in Revenue Management, airline, travel, pricing, forecasting, or commercial analytics
- Experience with Sabre, ATPCO, or other airline industry systems/data
- Experience with Alteryx, Tableau, Power BI, VBA, R, SAS, Oracle
