This role advises the company on a broad range of legal issues in support of Nordstrom’s online, physical, and omni-channel retail operations, including technology, strategic operations, marketing, supplier and service-related contracts, projects, and initiatives. In addition to its core commercial contracting responsibilities, this role will also provide support across select business functions, including marketing and advertising, loyalty, gift card, payments, and restaurant operations.

A day in the life…
  • Structure, draft, negotiate, and advise business clients on a variety of commercial contracts relating to the operation of multichannel fashion retail, including technology, SaaS, shop-in-shop, merchandise, distribution, supply chain, co-brand/partnership, payments, digital media, and marketing agreements.
  • Advise clients at all levels within the business on a broad range of legal issues in support of business initiatives, including technology and product development, brand and technology licenses and audits, usage agreements, vendor and co-branded initiatives, data-sharing agreements, policy creation and change, regulatory compliance, and innovation strategy.
  • Provide counsel on strategic deals, deliver practical and timely day-to-day legal advice, and consult on issues that arise across the business and within existing commercial relationships.
  • Lead larger-impact projects both within the department and across the company while working with cross-functional teams, including the development of legal processes or templates to increase efficiency and better serve clients.
  • From time to time, monitor regulatory and compliance developments relevant to the company’s commercial operations, and provide proactive advice and training to business clients.

You own this if…
  • J.D. with a license to practice law in any U.S. jurisdiction.
  • 7–10 years’ legal experience in a top-tier law firm and/or in-house legal department handling contracts, marketing, technology, and business transactions, intellectual property, or regulatory issues related to product distribution or the retail industry.
  • Retail and/or customer-facing business experience strongly preferred.
  • Exposure to or interest in one or more of the following is a plus: marketing and advertising, loyalty, payments and payment processing, real estate leasing, and restaurant or food & beverage operations.
  • Excellent research, analytical, contract drafting, and communication skills.
  • An AI-forward mindset, with demonstrated experience using AI tools—such as generative AI and AI-enabled workflow platforms—to increase efficiency, strengthen work product, and support innovative legal service delivery, along with enthusiasm for adopting and championing new technology.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment and establish working relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • Proficiency in time management, with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment, and the ability to proficiently navigate rapidly changing business priorities.
