Role Overview

Our Finance & Accounting team plays a critical role in supporting that vision by delivering accurate financial information, driving operational excellence, and helping leaders make informed business decisions. We're looking for a Senior Corporate Accountant who combines strong technical accounting skills with a proactive mindset and a passion for continuous improvement.

As a Senior Corporate Accountant, you will be responsible for supporting the accounting and financial reporting activities of Cortland's corporate operations, including the Aviation department and other assigned corporate entities. You will play a key role in the month-end close process, financial reporting, internal controls, and cross-functional business initiatives while partnering with teams across the organization to support continued growth and scalability.

What You Will Do
Financial Reporting & Close
  • Lead key aspects of the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes for assigned corporate entities.
  • Prepare and review journal entries, account reconciliations, and supporting schedules.
  • Analyze monthly financial results and investigate significant variances.
  • Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and management reporting packages.
  • Ensure accounting records are maintained in compliance with U.S. GAAP and company policies.
Corporate & Real Estate Accounting
  • Support accounting for corporate operations, capital projects, fixed assets, leases, and intercompany transactions.
  • Partner with Asset Management, Development, Construction, Treasury, Tax, FP&A, and Operational Accounting teams on accounting and reporting matters.
  • Support financial reporting requirements across Cortland's corporate and real estate platforms.
Audit, Controls & Compliance
  • Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for internal and external audits.
  • Assist in maintaining and enhancing internal controls and accounting procedures.
  • Support regulatory, tax, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Help identify and resolve accounting issues while ensuring compliance with company policies.
Process Improvement & Business Partnership
  • Identify opportunities to improve accounting processes and reporting efficiency.
  • Leverage technology and automation tools to streamline workflows and increase accuracy.
  • Develop strong partnerships with stakeholders across the organization to support informed business decisions.
  • Participate in special projects, system implementations, and finance transformation initiatives.
Leadership & Development
  • Serve as a resource for less experienced team members and help promote accounting best practices.
  • Contribute to a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance.
  • 4+ years of progressive accounting experience.
  • Strong understanding of U.S. GAAP and financial reporting principles.
  • Experience with month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • CPA certification or CPA candidate.
  • Public accounting experience.
  • Experience in real estate, multifamily housing, construction, development, or corporate accounting environments.
  • Experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools.
  • Knowledge of process automation tools such as Power Query, Power BI, or similar technologies.
