Summary

The Senior Substation Commissioning Technologist creates an environment of commissioning excellence. They are consistently looking for opportunities to improve the delivery and execution of commissioning projects. You will be responsible for inspecting, testing and commissioning high voltage power system equipment such as power transformers, circuit breakers, instrument transformers, switchgear, protective relays, and SCADA systems. You will be responsible for test results analysis, quality control and daily field reporting. You will lead commissioning activities and coordinate with the construction supervisor to ensure effective execution of substation installations and upgrades. You will also troubleshoot and resolve any issues or deficiencies that arise during the commissioning process, ensuring compliance with technical specifications and safety standards. Leading a team of commissioning technicians, you will be accountable for delivery of projects safely while providing guidance and mentorship for those in your report.

Qualifications
  • Diploma/degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related field.
  • 5+ years experience in power systems commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting, preferably in high voltage substation environments.
  • Knowledge of power systems theory, substation components, operation, and protection systems.
  • Experience in brownfield substations is considered an asset.

Skills
  • Proficiency in using electrical testing equipment and software, such as multimeters, power analyzers, Omicron, Doble, Megger, and more.
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, architectural, and SCADA schematic drawings.
  • Ability to identify and resolve equipment installation issues.
  • Ability to analyze test results and recognize deficiencies.
  • Ability to communicate with and navigate software of different types of relays such SEL, GE, Siemens and ABB.
  • Strong understanding of Protection & Control systems.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working at heights and in adverse weather.
  • Comfortable working in high pressure situations under strict time constraints such as during power system outages.

Duties

Leadership
  • Develop technical and strategic project delivery plans in conjunction with Project Manager and senior management where necessary. Assist in project estimation and execution strategies.
  • Provide technical assistance, mentoring and coaching to junior and intermediate level technicians.
  • Attend and contribute to regular Safety/Construction meetings including project kickoffs, reviews and weekly tactical meetings.
  • Review project packages for design and material correctness prior to project start.
  • Develop outage plans and staging when required by the client.
  • Assist with the resolution and closeout of non-compliance / deficiency reports.
  • Conduct pre-work tailboard meetings, JSA discussions and field level hazard assessments.
  • Ensure Return to Service, Initial energization and post energization commitments are met and support for the Construction team is present during all required phases of outage execution.

Operations
  • Conduct pre-work tailboard meetings, JSA discussions and field level hazard assessments.
  • Perform inspections and testing to verify that equipment and systems are properly installed and meet design specifications.
  • Lead substation commissioning activities and provide direct supervision to Junior and Intermediate substation commissioning technologists.
  • Conduct functional tests and measurements on equipment to verify their performance and functionality.
  • Identify and troubleshoot any issues or deficiencies that arise during the commissioning process.
  • Conduct daily field reports as required.
  • Document and report the results of commissioning activities and provide recommendations for improvement.
  • Coordinate and communicate with Supervisors, Project Managers, Engineers, Contractors, and clients throughout the commissioning process.
  • Follow and enforce safety rules and regulations, such as Permit To Work (PTW), Lock out - Tag Out (LOTO), Guarantee Of Isolation (GOI) and electrical lockout procedures.
  • Certification in power system switching and holding of GOI's is considered an asset.

Responsibilities
  • Overall Accountability: The Senior Commissioning Technologist will report to the Commissioning Manager, ensuring the effective operation of commissioning activities. This role goes beyond day-to-day tasks, involving strategic decision-making to drive overall success. The Senior Commissioning Technologist takes responsibility in the development, execution and turnover of commissioning projects.
  • Coordination: Active involvement with all applicable parties within Iconic, in addition to the client to ensure seamless coordination of commissioning operations.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensuring safety protocols and compliance with necessary regulations, throughout all stages.
  • Client Interaction: Routine client interaction, providing updates and addressing inquiries related to commissioning activities.

Other

  • Must have a valid Class 5 Driver's License.
