Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry.This segment is classified into two main product groupings - carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use.

Scope of Role

Corning Incorporated is seeking a Senior Carrier Networks Systems Engineer to join our Optical Communications team in Charlotte, NC. In this role, you will partner with Sales, Marketing, and Customer Care to design fiber optic network solutions for large telecom carriers - supporting pre- and post-sales engagements across Fiber-to-the-x (FTTx) architectures, including Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH), Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs), and Fiber-to-the-Business (FTTB) networks.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead passive optical network (PON) design and bill of materials (BOM) development for large-scale FTTx access network deployments
  • Partner with sales and commercial teams on customer engagements to deliver technical presentations, training, and pre- and post-sales support
  • Develop optimized network design solutions using Corning's fiber optic product portfolio, applying engineering methods and cost modeling strategies
  • Lead design teams of systems engineers and technicians on complex, large-scale projects from scoping through delivery
  • Author design practices, technical documentation, and customer deliverables that translate engineering requirements into clear, commercially sound solutions

  • Travel required to support customer engagements


Experiences/Education - Required

  • B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline
  • Full professional proficiency in English, written and verbal
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
  • Fiber optic design experience


Experiences/Education - Desired

  • 8-10 years of experience in the telecommunications industry
  • Experience with outside plant fiber optic design
  • Knowledge of optical fiber theory and passive optical network (PON) products including FTTx, local area network (LAN), and data center applications
  • Field experience with fiber optic products and processes including cable handling, fiber splicing, connectorization, and testing
  • Experience with computer-aided drafting (CAD) tools and GIS software programs
  • Background in a commercial organization (Sales, Marketing, or equivalent)
  • Product development or manufacturing experience

  • Synthesizes technical and commercial inputs from multiple sources to develop focused, defensible engineering positions
  • Presents technical solutions clearly to diverse audiences - from field technicians to executive leadership
  • Manages multiple concurrent design engagements and delivers against project deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Formulates solutions using both core and newly released product lines, including products modified to meet custom specifications

The range for this position is $98,588.00 - $135,559.00 assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
