Position Overview
Caterpillar is seeking a Senior Backend / Integration Engineer to develop enterprise-scale backend services and platform integrations supporting next-generation autonomy, simulation, NVIDIA, and Digital Twin initiatives. This role focuses on designing and developing cloud-native backend microservices, REST/gRPC APIs, distributed systems, and event-driven architectures that enable communication between enterprise platforms, simulation environments, and AI-driven engineering systems. The ideal candidate has strong backend development experience, expertise in Python-based microservices, cloud-native architecture, distributed systems, and API integration. Experience with Digital Twins, NVIDIA Omniverse, OpenUSD, or simulation platforms is highly desirable.
Key Responsibilities
Design, develop, and maintain backend microservices supporting enterprise integration platforms.
Build RESTful APIs, gRPC services, and event-driven integrations for simulation and Digital Twin environments.
Develop scalable cloud-native services using modern backend development practices.
Create integration adapters between enterprise applications, NVIDIA platforms, and simulation environments.
Support Digital Twin asset exchange using OpenUSD/USD or similar technologies.
Develop asynchronous processing workflows, including orchestration, retries, idempotency, and event handling.
Manage object storage, artifact lifecycle, metadata, versioning, and traceability.
Define API contracts, event schemas, and integration standards.
Design and implement automated integration testing and contract testing frameworks.
Participate in architecture reviews, sprint planning, technical discussions, and solution design.
Collaborate with internal engineering teams, NVIDIA partners, and external vendors.
Troubleshoot production issues and optimize application performance.
Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, monitoring, observability, and operational readiness.
Analyze business requirements and recommend scalable software solutions.
Modify and enhance existing software to improve functionality, performance, and maintainability.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field.
5+ years of professional software development experience.
Strong hands-on experience developing backend microservices.
Experience designing and developing REST APIs and gRPC services.
Strong Python development experience (preferred).
Experience with distributed systems and enterprise integrations.
Experience building cloud-native applications using AWS, Azure, or GCP.
Experience with event-driven and asynchronous architectures.
Strong debugging, troubleshooting, and analytical skills.
Experience working in Agile/Scrum environments.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience with NVIDIA Omniverse or Isaac Sim.
