Full Job Description
The Role

We're looking for a Senior Backend Developer to join our 10-person team to drive profitable climate action in businesses and make a meaningful difference with their work. This is a hybrid role in downtown Toronto that expects 4 days a week in office with WFH Fridays.

You will work directly with the leadership team to deliver meaningful value to our customers, your team-mates, the climate, and the foundations of our technical platform. This role involves wearing many hats - such as working across our system stack, contributing directly to product and architectural decisions, team culture, and critical code decisions.

Our dream candidate is a lifelong learner who thrives with autonomy, ownership of their work and a collaborative team environment. You will thrive in this role if:

  1. You're motivated by complex and dynamic logistics and optimization problems
  2. Love working with teams to help them succeed

In this role you will be expected to provide client-facing solutions and empower our team to streamline operations.

Our client-facing stack is TypeScript - functional React, node.js, PostgreSQL, Docker, GCP, Anthropic, and we're building new pipelines and integrations in Python. We want someone with a proven track-record of designing and developing mathematical-focused software systems and infrastructure with significant data volume, processing, real-time results, and security requirements (like those found in financial systems). These data systems are currently written in node.js and python to support early team competency but are not limited to either..

Responsibilities
  • Key code contributor of our primary BE services (server, data processing systems, reporting systems) ~70% time coding (Writing code, Reviewing PRs, Technical Solutioning, etc)
  • Architect complex data aggregate, insight, forecasting, and scenario analysis systems to empower climate action
  • Design and develop data pipelines that can manage inconsistent load volumes of sensitive/secure data
  • Improve observability and audibility of data, systems, and processes for both internal and external stakeholders
  • Support the customer-team's autonomy through thoughtful self-serve solutions to challenges
  • Implement and encourage code and patterns that focus on quality, scalability, security, accessibility, performance, and overall good coding practice
  • Champion ownership of data management and data processing systems, following financial system standards (security, idempotency, ledger, etc.)
  • Learning and keeping up-to-date with mathematics behind carbon accounting inside-and-out
  • In your element when devising creative solutions to problems
  • Own and handle bugs as they come, and raise the bar on system quality and developer experience
  • Actively share opinions and engage in product & solutioning sessions
  • Define, manage stakeholders, and execute on your own technical solutions
  • Act as both mentor and mentee to grow together with the team
  • Keep up to date with technology industry trends, best practices, and exciting opportunities - and share them with the team

Preferred Skills
  • Motivated by designing and implementing systems that house and process complex data focusing on accuracy, performance, real-time results, and security
  • Seeking the challenge of scaling technology for a complex, dynamic industry with rapidly advancing scientific and technological standards
  • Thrilled by a logistics challenge and coding scalable, configurable, idempotent mathematical data pipelines
  • Enjoys developing code bases that are flexible and quick to work in
  • Excited to try new things - new patterns, languages, AI tooling, etc. to keep pushing the boundaries of what we can accomplish
  • Loves writing great queries and better indexes (or other performance optimizations) in SQL (we use Postgres)
  • Has shipped production node.js and/or python server code
  • Experience with setting up, managing, and optimizing cloud-based architecture (GCP, AWS, Azure)
  • Comfortable drafting UI with Claude-code assistance (FE team will assist with deliverables in UI/UX for projects)
  • Familiar with asynchronous microservice architectures
  • Care about the quality of your work and delivering performant architecture that will scale with our business
  • Experienced defining, solutioning and delivering projects from conception to production
  • Comfortable with shifting requirements and technical challenges
  • Ability to pick up context quickly and adapt to frequent changes (we are a startup!)
  • Driven to solve problems and collaborate with teammates across the company
  • Want to do work that actually matters (in fighting the climate crisis)
Nice to Haves
  • Experience creating services from scratch
  • Experience with analytics, KPIs, and data-driven decision making
  • Education or experience with environmental sustainability and/or carbon accounting
  • Experience working with AI-coding systems and ensuring quality and consistency
Our Stack
  • React/TypeScript
  • node.js/TypeScript
