Job Description

A day in the life:

As a Senior Applications Administrator at Thermo Fisher Scientific, you'll maintain and optimize our critical infrastructure and applications. You'll join a collaborative team dedicated to supporting our mission of enabling customers to make the world healthier, cleaner, and safer. In this position, you'll manage complex enterprise systems, implement effective solutions, and ensure maximum system performance and reliability. Working with advanced technologies across cloud and on-premises environments, you'll have opportunities to drive automation, improve processes, and contribute to our digital transformation initiatives.

This role provides hands-on, end-to-end operational support for laboratory instruments, instrument systems & software and enterprise applications like LIMS and ELN used by the labs. You will own the day-to-day setup, maintenance support, upgrades/patching, troubleshooting, and performance monitoring needed to keep systems stable with minimal downtime, while supporting change control and instrument/system validation activities.

Qualification requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in a preferred field of study, such as Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering or related fields. Advanced degree preferred.

In some cases, an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.

Experience requirements

  • Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 5+ years’). 
  • Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS & Linux) and virtualization technologies is required. 
  • Experience working with Windows Server and operating systems administration is required. 
  • Experience working with automation and scripting (PowerShell, Python, Shell) is required. 
  • Experience working with incident management and problem-solving capabilities is required. 
  • Experience working with Azure is preferred.

  • Expert knowledge of three or more technology services (Server – Windows/Linux; Data Centers; Storage; Virtualization; Messaging; Global Operations Management; Citrix; and Cloud platforms) 
  • Effective project management and communication skills with ability to act as a project manager 
  • Effective coaching and mentoring skills 
  • Ability to act as a Subject Matter Expert and resource to junior employees 
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas effectively 
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues on Windows, Linux, and storage platforms 
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills

There may be times where you will be required to attend out of standard working hours, for escalation calls and project work as needed.

Working Conditions and Environment: 

  • Work is performed in an office/ laboratory/clinical/and/or home office environment with exposure to electrical office equipment.
  • For Labs-based staff, exposure to biological fluids with potential exposure to infectious organisms. 
  • For Labs-based staff, personal protective equipment required such as protective eyewear, garments and gloves
  • Exposure to fluctuating and/or extreme temperatures on rare occasions.

Physical Requirements:

  • Frequently stationary for 6-8 hours per day. 
  • Repetitive hand movement of both hands with the ability to make fast, simple, repeated movements of the fingers, hands, and wrists.
  • Frequent mobility required. 
  • Occasional crouching, stooping, bending and twisting of upper body and neck. 
  • Light to moderate lifting and carrying (or otherwise moves) objects including luggage and laptop computer with a maximum lift of 15-20 lbs. 
  • Ability to access and use a variety of computer software developed both in-house and off-the-shelf.
  • Ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand; with the ability to listen to and understand information and ideas presented through spoken words and sentences. 
  • Frequently interacts with others to obtain or relate information to diverse groups. 
  • Works independently with little guidance or reliance on oral or written instructions and plans work schedules to meet goals. Requires multiple periods of intense concentration. 
  • Performs a wide range of variable tasks as dictated by variable demands and changing conditions with little predictability as to the occurrence. Ability to perform under stress. Ability to multi-task. 
  • Regular and consistent attendance.

Location: Office-based in Richmond, VA. Relocation assistance is NOT provided. 

Compensation and Benefits

The salary range estimated for this position based in Virginia is $75,800.00–$113,670.00.

This position may also be eligible to receive a variable annual bonus based on company, team, and/or individual performance results in accordance with company policy. We offer a comprehensive Total Rewards package that our U.S. colleagues and their families can count on, which includes:
