SENIOR ADVISOR, RELIABILITY COMPLIANCE

ABOUT THE ROLE

TransAlta is seeking a results-driven Senior Advisor, Reliability Compliance to join the Reliability Compliance team and play a key role in advancing the organization's commitment to safe, reliable, and compliant operations. This role offers exposure across the NERC/ARS O&P and CIP standard families, with the opportunity to grow alongside a maturing compliance program.

Reporting to the Manager, Compliance, the Senior Advisor, Reliability Compliance is primarily responsible for the day-to-day sustainment activities required to maintain compliance with applicable NERC/ARS reliability standards and related technical rules across an assigned portfolio of facilities. The role coordinates periodic data submittals, self-certifications, audits, and entity registration activities, while supporting the Reliability Compliance Team's internal controls program. The Senior Advisor works collaboratively with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders to demonstrate ongoing compliance and continuously improve TransAlta's reliability compliance program.

This is a full-time salaried position based out of our Head Office in Downtown Calgary, AB, with the flexibility of a hybrid work schedule.

A DAY IN THE LIFE

Entity Registration & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Manage entity registration activities and associated designation of duty filings with NERC and Regional Entities
  • Work with internal and external stakeholders, including operations, engineering, contractors, vendors, and LTSA providers, to gather compliance evidence and flag performance issues in a timely manner
  • Provide clear and consistent status reports to internal stakeholders and escalate risks to the Manager in a timely manner


Compliance Monitoring
  • Coordinate and submit periodic regulatory data submittals to NERC, Regional Entities, and System Operators in accordance with each reliability requirement
  • Prepare Reliability Standards Audit Worksheets (RSAWs), gather and verify compliance evidence, and coordinate responses to information requests in support of self-certifications and audits
  • Investigate potential compliance issues, including performing root cause analysis, to inform the development of self-reports and mitigation plans
  • Develop self-reports and mitigation plans for identified compliance issues, including reliability risk assessments, and oversee execution of associated corrective actions


Internal Controls
  • Coordinate monthly compliance questionnaires and meetings with Compliance Delegates to monitor the ongoing health of internal controls
  • Support Compliance Process Owners and Delegates in maintaining fleetwide, fuel-type, and plant-specific TSD processes, forms, and checklists
  • Support the development and delivery of training and awareness content to Compliance Delegates, and track on-time completion of assigned training
  • Identify and recommend continuous improvement opportunities to mature the reliability compliance program


ABOUT YOU
  • A Bachelor's degree or equivalent education, training, or experience in Engineering, Economics, Business, Law, or a related field
  • Previous experience working with NERC or Alberta reliability standards is required
  • 7+ years' experience in a regulatory, compliance, or utilities environment is preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently as a senior professional, with the flexibility to manage shifting day-to-day priorities across a broad portfolio of reliability requirements
  • In-depth knowledge of NERC/ARS compliance program elements (including internal controls, evidence management, self-certifications, audits, and self-reporting) is required
  • Working knowledge of related disciplines such as protection systems, generator modelling, SCADA, real-time control room operations, or cyber security is considered an asset
  • Familiarity with large language models (LLMs) and their application to compliance work, such as summarizing regulatory standards, reviewing evidence, or drafting written submissions, is considered a strong asset
  • Ability to act as a subject matter resource to colleagues unfamiliar with reliability compliance
  • Robust ethics coupled with respect for the highest compliance standard
  • Experience working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders including senior management
  • Ability to work cross-functionally across the organization to effectively solve problems
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including technical writing
  • Capable of handling numerous priorities and meeting expected deadlines
