Purpose of Your Job Position:Reporting to the Director of Accounting, the Senior Accountant is responsible for the accounting, financial reporting, month-end close, bank reconciliations, fixed assets, budgets, governmental and tax reporting support, and audit support for assigned nonprofit corporations. Each Senior Accountant is assigned several corporations of the Carmelite Sisters of the Most Sacred Heart of Los Angeles. The role ensures accurate financial reporting in accordance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards and provides meaningful financial indicators for assigned corporations.
Position Requirements Qualifications and Education Requirements: - Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance.
- Five or more years of accounting experience; experience in religious or nonprofit environments is preferred.
- Strong knowledge of GAAP, non-profit accounting, and financial internal controls.
- Experience in financial statement production, including bank reconciliations, journal entries, accounts payable, accounts receivable, fixed assets and donor restricted assets preferred.
- Experience with accounting and billing software, Multiview and Point Click Care preferred.
- Experience in operational and capital budget preparation including business plans preferred.
- Experience in preparing financial and variance analysis.
- Demonstrates excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Access).

Job Functions:Reporting to the Director of Accounting, the Senior Accountant provides financial and analytical support to Administrators, the Director of Accounting, and other key individuals responsible for the financial health of assigned corporations. The position participates in leadership meetings by presenting financial reports, variance analyses, and narratives explaining each corporation's financial status. The Senior Accountant prepares bank reconciliations, journal entries, account reconciliations, and recurring financial schedules in accordance with the month-end close process and prepares or supports assigned governmental, tax, regulatory, and compliance filings.

Duties and Responsibilities - For corporations with rental arrangements, assist with accurate accounting by working with assigned team members to prepare revenue reports and record revenue journal entries.
- For corporations with resident revenue, record revenue and reconcile recorded amounts to the applicable source systems.
- For corporations with resident revenue, understand the source and mechanisms that create gross revenue, contractual allowances, and allowances for uncollectable accounts (bad debt). Creates schedules and appropriate journal entries.
- For corporations with retail sales, prepare and file sales tax returns. Maintain schedules for inventory and cost of goods sold, prepare related journal entries, and reconcile balance sheet accounts to internal retail sales reports.
- Create journal entries timely and accurately capturing payroll and corresponding liabilities, including detailed review of payroll as an internal control.
- Verify postings for contributions with and without donor restrictions and reconcile the balances to Advancement records. Provide reports on donor-restricted funds as part of the financial reporting package.
- Accurately record releases from donor restrictions and provide related accounting guidance to Administrators when needed.
- Prepare monthly bank reconciliations for assigned corporations, investigate and resolve reconciling items, and prepare any journal entries required to bring the general ledger into agreement with bank records.
- Maintain the fixed asset ledger and depreciation schedules for assigned corporations, including additions, disposals, transfers, capitalization assessments, asset classifications, useful lives, accumulated depreciation, and the fixed asset rollforward. Reconcile fixed asset balances to the general ledger, prepare monthly depreciation journal entries, and retain supporting documentation in accordance with capitalization policies and audit requirements.
- Maintain and reconcile prepaid expense, deferred cost, and other applicable amortization schedules; verify underlying agreements, amounts, service periods, and remaining balances; and prepare accurate monthly amortization journal entries with supporting documentation.
- Maintain and reconcile construction-in-progress schedules monthly, review project costs and supporting documentation with Administrators and project stakeholders, investigate discrepancies, assess completed projects for timely transfer to fixed assets, and prepare related journal entries.
- Prepare and review monthly balance sheet account reconciliations for assigned corporations, investigate and resolve reconciling items promptly, retain supporting documentation, and escalate aged, unusual, or unresolved balances to the Director of Finance.
- Prepare budgets for corporations assigned, working with the administrator and department leaders.
- Maintain a complete set of recurring month-end schedules for assigned corporations, including accrued expenses, deferred revenue, debt, leases, intercompany balances, pledges receivable, restricted net assets, and other significant accounts, as applicable. Reconcile each schedule to the general ledger, investigate and resolve differences, prepare related journal entries within the established close calendar, and submit completed schedules with supporting documentation for review.
- Prepare variance analysis for corporations assigned, working with leaders to resolve variances through action plans.
- Prepare financial statements for each entity providing variance analysis to the Director of Finance and administrative team.
- Prepare or provide Prepared by Client (PBC) schedules and supporting documentation for the annual audit or review of assigned corporations. Responsibilities include reconciling requested schedules to the general ledger, preparing the functional expense allocation worksheet for audited financial statements and Form 990, supporting tax and governmental reporting requests, and responding promptly to follow-up questions from auditors and external advisors.
- Prepare, coordinate, and maintain supporting schedules for governmental, tax, and regulatory filings applicable to assigned corporations, including federal, state, and local reports. Reconcile filing data to the general ledger, maintain documentation and filing calendars, monitor due dates, obtain required internal approvals, and respond to information requests from governmental agencies, auditors, and external tax or compliance advisors.
- Annually provide support to the administrators preparing the Apostolic Plan, ensuring that the financial schedules are updated with finalized budgets for review by the Director of Finance, Superior General, General Council and Corporate Boards.
