Job Title: Senior AccountantJob DescriptionThis Senior Accountant role is a key position within a growing Accounting & Finance team based in Vancouver, Canada. You will report to the Manager of Financial Reporting and take ownership of core corporate accounting and reporting functions, including monthly close, consolidations, IFRS guidance, and tax support. Responsibilities- Perform monthly close activities, including preparing journal entries, completing balance sheet account reconciliations, and reviewing and analyzing relevant aspects of the balance sheet, cash flow, and profit and loss statements.
- Review and prepare monthly transactions and journal entries to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation.
- Review and prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual reconciliation reports, ensuring they are finalized accurately and on time.
- Review and prepare consolidation entries for group reporting, ensuring compliance with applicable accounting standards.
- Provide IFRS guidance on accounting treatment and implications for new activities or specific transactions, as needed.
- Prepare group consolidations and supporting working papers to support internal and external reporting requirements.
- Draft detailed accounting memos for new and complex transactions, clearly documenting assumptions, judgments, and conclusions.
- Support the preparation of annual Canadian tax returns by providing accurate financial data and working papers.
- Coordinate with external auditors, tax advisors, and other service providers to support audits, reviews, and tax compliance activities.
- Perform ad hoc duties and tasks as assigned by the Manager of Financial Reporting, contributing to special projects and process improvements.
Essential Skills- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, or a related field.
- Canadian CPA designation (CA, CGA, CMA, CPA) or an equivalent professional accounting designation.
- 5+ years of accounting experience in a mining company or at least 3 years of experience in a public practice accounting firm, including experience with journal entries, bank reconciliations, profit and loss statements, and working papers.
- Strong knowledge of IFRS and its application to corporate accounting and financial reporting.
- Proven experience with general ledger accounting, month-end close processes, and account reconciliations.
- Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including proficiency with pivot tables, lookups, and other advanced functions.
- Strong general ledger and financial reporting skills, including balance sheet, cash flow, and P&L analysis.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated adaptability and willingness to take on a variety of tasks within a changing environment.
Additional Skills & Qualifications- Experience working in the mining industry or with mining clients is highly desirable.
- Experience in a Big 4 or other public practice accounting firm is considered a strong asset.
- Experience working with ERP systems such as Sage or SAP.
- Experience working with public companies and familiarity with public company reporting requirements.
- Spanish language skills are an asset and can help distinguish a candidate.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with attention to detail and accuracy.
- Ability to work effectively in a small team and collaborate across functions in an entrepreneurial environment.
- Interest in contributing to process improvements and building out financial reporting capabilities in a growing organization.
Work EnvironmentYou will join a close-knit, three-person Accounting & Finance team and report directly to the Manager of Financial Reporting. The role is primarily office-based, with an expectation of working four days per week on-site. The standard workweek is approximately 40 hours, with typical hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and flexibility available for earlier or later start times. The environment generally does not require regular overtime and supports a healthy work-life balance.
