Description

The University of Chicago's Department of Surgery, Section of General Surgery, is searching for a full-time associate professor or professor to serve as a senior academic breast surgeon and as Director, Breast Surgical Oncology Program. The appointee will provide longitudinal inpatient and outpatient care to patients seeking breast care. Direct patient care responsibilities include managing patients with complex surgical oncological needs and limited off-hours and weekend coverage. As Director of the Breast Surgical Oncology Program, the appointee will chart the future direction and growth of Breast Surgical Oncology from an academic, clinical, and educational perspective. They will provide and oversee advanced clinical care for patients with breast diseases, including both malignant and benign conditions. They will ensure consistent and high-quality multidisciplinary patient management, working with medical oncology, radiation oncology, pathology, radiology, and plastic surgery. The appointee will lead patient evaluation, including risk assessment, and pre-surgical and post-operative care and participate in weekly multidisciplinary breast tumor boards to develop collaborative treatment plans.

Other duties will include teaching and supervision of trainees and students, and scholarly activity. Academic rank and compensation are dependent upon qualifications. New ambulatory facilities are located in Orland Park and River East, and the Ingalls Health System is also integrated into the network. The free-standing, new Cancer Pavilion will open in the spring of 2027 and will house under one roof outpatient and inpatient activity for cancer patients and further integrate research into routine cancer patient care. The Breast Surgical Oncology Program at the University of Chicago is a nationally recognized leader in the treatment of breast cancer. The program offers comprehensive, multidisciplinary care, integrating advanced surgical techniques with the latest research and clinical trials. Faculty members are highly experienced and renowned for their expertise in breast surgery, reconstruction, and survivorship.

Prior to the start of employment, qualified applicants must: 1) have a medical doctorate or equivalent, 2) hold or be eligible for medical licensure in the State of Illinois, 3) be Board certified or eligible in General Surgery, and 4) have completed an accredited fellowship or equivalent training in surgical oncology or breast surgical oncology.
