Job Title: Scrub Technologist

Certifications: Certification by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting

- At least one year previous experience preferred
Description:
Surgical technologists work under the direct supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures.
The surgical technologist is responsible for ensuring the operating room environment is safe, and that equipment functions properly.
They ensure that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety.
The surgical technologist handles instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure.
They have an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipate the needs of the surgeon.
Duties include checking supplies and equipment needed for a procedure.
They scrub, gown, and glove themselves, the surgeon, and assistants.
They perform appropriate counts with the circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is closed.
The surgical technologist assists in draping the sterile field.
They pass instruments to the surgeon during the procedure and maintain the highest standard of sterile technique.
They assist with terminal cleaning of the room and clean and prepare instruments for terminal sterilization.
Additionally, they assist in prepping the surgical suite for the next patient.
The surgical technologist is also responsible for training new employees and students in the role.
They are not permitted to function in the circulating nurse role, first assistant role, or administer medications and complete patient records.
