Summary

Balfour Beatty Construction in Atlanta, GA is seeking a Safety Health & Environmental Director. The primary duties of this role include participating in daily discussions on immediate safety challenges, project incidents, long-term safety strategies, and key data analytics findings. The position ensures consistent awareness of Safety SOPs, tracks National Safety Initiatives, coordinates with Division Safety Directors from other geographies, and manages task lists and deliverables to maintain organizational alignment. The primary role is field and project team engagement. Additionally, the role supports the development and continuous improvement of companywide safety programs by integrating technical expertise, and cross-functional communication to evaluate risks, identify root causes, and strengthen safety culture.

Essential Functions
  • Lead or assist in resolving technical safety challenges, ensuring alignment with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Contribute to the creation and rollout of national safety programs, tools, and standards.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders to ensure training content is accurate, relevant, and impactful.
  • Source, validate, and integrate safety data from multiple internal systems.
  • Conduct trend analysis, identify emerging risks, and produce monthly and quarterly safety performance reports.
  • Evaluate industry innovations, technologies, and best practices; prepare recommendations on applicability within the organization.
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and compliance with internal reporting standards.
  • Conduct project-level safety audits, inspections, and evaluations across assigned regions.
  • Facilitate onsite debriefs with project teams, highlighting strengths, gaps, and required corrective actions.
  • Prepare comprehensive follow-up reports and track closure of action items.
  • Support project teams in understanding and applying corporate safety expectations and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide coaching and guidance to field personnel to strengthen safety culture and hazard recognition.
  • Support project teams with critical picks, crane erections, pneumatic testing, hazard analysis, project-specific safety plans, environmental safety compliance, etc.
  • Partner with Corporate Communications and Business Development to ensure safety remains a core organizational message.
  • Develop and distribute safety alerts, newsletters, campaign materials, and leadership communications.
  • Support national safety campaigns, recognition programs, and awareness initiatives.
  • Evaluate root causes of significant incidents and identify systemic contributing factors.

Minimum Requirements
  • 7 years or more working as a safety professional in the construction industry.
  • Certified as a Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) required, OSHA 500, OSHA 30.
  • 7 years or more of supervisory experience related to staff and subcontractors.
  • Knowledge of scaffold, fall protection, excavation, fatal four, trenching, swing stage, and other OSHA guidelines.
  • Demonstrate proficiency using a personal computer (PC) and company communication tools, such as email, internet, and Microsoft products (e.g., Word, Excel, Office, Outlook).

Preferred Requirements
  • 10 years or more experience with a commercial General Contractor
  • CSP preferred
  • Bachelor of Science in Safety & Environmental Health or related field.
  • Knowledge of Safety Industry analytical tools such as SIF and Energy Based Assessments.
