Position Details

  • Job Title: Safety Engineer
  • Location: On-Site at DEVCOM AC Picatinny Arsenal, Dover, NJ
  • Start Date: 4 to 6 weeks or sooner
  • Citizenship: Must be a US Citizen
  • Clearance Requirement: Ability to obtain a Secret Clearance (Active Secret preferred but not required)
  • Salary: TBD based on experience
  • Interview Process: Multiple interviews (virtual and in-person), extensive background checks, and verification of certifications
  • Relocation Assistance: Limited (Local candidates preferred)

Core Mission

The primary mission of this role is to protect Army personnel, equipment, and the environment by systematically identifying, assessing, and mitigating hazards throughout the entire lifecycle of armament systems.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Hazard Analysis: Conduct complex hazard analyses, including Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), System Hazard Analysis (SHA), and Functional Hazard Analysis (FHA). Rigorously evaluate hardware and software interfaces to identify potential failure modes.
  • Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as the safety subject matter expert during key programmatic milestone reviews, such as System Requirements Reviews (SRR), Preliminary Design Reviews (PDR), and Critical Design Reviews (CDR). Provide technical recommendations and analysis to assist the Government in ensuring that safety considerations are fully integrated into the system design.
  • Risk Mitigation: Apply the system safety design order of precedence to eliminate or mitigate risks.
  • Documentation & Tracking: Maintain an accurate, closed-loop Hazard Tracking System (HTS). Draft Safety Assessment Reports (SAR) and other documentation for Government review and risk acceptance.
  • Mishap Investigation Support: Provide critical technical support for Government-led mishap investigations to identify root causes and recommend engineering design changes that prevent recurrence.

Required Knowledge & Regulatory Qualifications

To effectively execute these duties, the engineer must possess a comprehensive understanding of core Department of Defense (DoD) and Army regulations, including:
  • MIL-STD-882E: Standard Practice for System Safety (the foundational standard dictating the mandatory system safety process and risk assessment matrix).
  • AR 385-10: The Army Safety Program.
  • DA PAM 385-16: System Safety Management Guide.
  • DA PAM 385-10: Army Safety Program Procedures.
  • DA PAM 385-40: Army Accident Investigations.
  • Joint Software System Safety Engineering Handbook (JSSSEH): Heavy reliance on this knowledge for software-intensive systems to ensure holistic system safety and regulatory compliance, depending on the specific system domain.
