Variable pay may provide additional opportunities for financial awards. This job is eligible to participate in IP's short-term incentive plan.
The Safety Engineer reports to the Safety Manager in Valliant, Oklahoma. Valliant is a 5,000 ton per day containerboard mill with 3 paper machines, 3 continuous digesters, 3 secondary fiber plants, and a utilities/chemical recovery complex. It currently operates with 340 mill employees and 150 contract maintenance employees in a results-oriented environment.
Responsibilities (include but not limited to):- Drive continuous safety improvement through regular engagement and coaching of employees and contractors at all levels
- Monitor contractor activities to assure compliance with regulatory requirements and International Paper Safety Standards
- Improve employee safety behavior through teaching, leading, one-to-one contacts, and group settings
- Recognize existing and potential safety hazards and then create, articulate, and implement strategies to avoid or minimize the hazards
- Promote and participate in the planning and implementation of communication strategies that deliver accurate, consistent, and timely information on business safety issues and employee concerns
- Ensure incidents, injuries, or occupational illnesses are investigated to determine root causes and preventive measures and that corrective actions are implemented
- Plan and implement safety policies and procedures in compliance with International Paper policies, local, state, and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations
- Inspect facilities, machinery, and safety equipment to identify and correct potential hazards, and to ensure safety regulation compliance
- Develop, coordinate, and provide training for employees on various health and safety topics, including new employees, refresher training, new program implementation; including hands-on proficiency evaluations
- Interview employees to obtain information about work environments, incidents, and feedback for workplace improvements
- Review plans and specifications for installation of new machinery or equipment to determine whether all safety requirements have been met
- Participate in approval program to bring new chemicals and materials on-site, including analysis of SDS for determining safe handling and PPE requirements
- Recommend process safety features that will reduce employees' exposure to chemical and physical work hazards
- Plan and coordinate industrial hygiene program elements with contract IH services including direct testing of air quality, noise, or temperature levels to verify compliance with health and safety regulations
- Conduct frequent Safety Inspections and Audits and lead the Mill's safety audit process to ensure continuous improvement of safety practices and follow up to see if corrective action is taken.
- Support Capital Project development and implementation ensuring Health and Safety concerns are addressed.
- Spend a substantial amount of time (>50%) in the field as a visible safety presence and resource.
- Support and participate in HSE Department requirements and activities, including weekend duty.
- Serve as the Mills Field Verification of Critical Controls (FVCC) champion, ensuring effective implementation, compliance, and continuous improvement of critical safety controls.
Qualifications:- Bachelor's degree required. Safety Engineering, Industrial Hygiene, preferred
- 2-3 years experience in safety, preferred
- Paper mill and/or related business experience, preferred
- Strong Technical understanding of Federal and State Safety and Health regulations
- Experience working with regulatory agencies and with the Corporate EHS&S groups, preferred
