Full Job Description
Safety Engineer

We are seeking an experienced Systems Safety Engineer to join our Test Operations Division. In this role, you will be responsible for identifying, evaluating, and mitigating hardware and software hazards across the entire product lifecycle of design, build and operations of advanced wind tunnels and their support systems; including high-pressure fluid systems, compressor systems, vacuum systems, and cryogenic systems.

You will work closely with multi-disciplinary engineering teams to design safety controls directly into critical infrastructure, ensuring total mission success.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Hazard & Risk Assessment: Perform quantitative and qualitative system safety analyses across facility development, and operational phases. This includes Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA), System/Subsystem Hazard Analysis (SHA/SSHA), and Operating & Support Hazard Analysis (O&SHA).
  • High-Energy Systems Analysis: Evaluate functional impacts of component failures, software exceptions, and mechanical faults. Model system risks using stress and load analysis.
  • Requirements Management: Define, decompose, and trace safety-critical hardware and software requirements from initial concept down to specific system verification test protocols.
  • Safety Leadership: Represent the organization in regular system safety meetings and working groups. Deliver technical safety arguments to military customer representatives, internal leadership, and federal aviation regulators.
  • Manage Hazard Tracking: Own the Hazard Tracking System (HTS) to ensure all identified risks are tracked, mitigated, and verified through design verification or testing.

Basic Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor of Science in Aerospace, Mechanical, Electrical, Systems Engineering, or a related STEM field.
  • Experience: 5+ years of related systems engineering or safety engineering experience within the defense or aerospace testing environment.
  • Core Standards Knowledge: Experience and familiarity of MIL-STD-882E (System Safety Program Requirements).
  • Must be able to attain a security clearance.

Preferred Skills & Certifications
  • Technical proficiency in analyzing high-pressure structures (e.g., pneumatics, hydraulics, COPVs) or energetic explosive materials.
  • Knowledge of the ASME boiler and pressure vessel code

The salary range provided is a general guideline. Actual pay will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to, education, experience, training, and other applicable qualifications. North Wind is committed to pay transparency in compliance with applicable state and local laws.

All candidates must be eligible to work in the United States.
