Overview

Responsibilities

  • Plans and implements safety policies and procedures in compliance with local, state, and federal rules and regulations including Standard Operation Procedures in place, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and construction safety management principles and best practices.
  • Serves as liaison with OSHA around practices, standards, violations, etc. to ensure Shawmut compliance and minimize risk, exposure and financial loss.
  • Works with insurance company personnel to represent and negotiate incident claims to obtain the most favorable outcome for Shawmut Design and Construction.
  • Ensures staff recovery following any work-related incident. Manage the loss control associated with their recovery after injuries.
  • Develops and implements strategic and annual plan and budget for the Safety function.
  • Assess the need related to safety standards, programs and practices. Develops and implements standards, programs and practices which balance safety needs and legal requirements with Shawmut’s World Class Safety culture, strategic goals, client needs, etc.
  • Manages, coaches and helps develop direct reports; leads performance and developmental conversations. Fully participates in the recruiting, interviewing and hiring of other Safety Department staff as needed.
  • Ensures that all staff has the required skills and competencies to meet the current and future needs of the Department. Encourages the professional and educational development of department personnel
  • Develops and ensures delivery of company-wide training, including, but not limited to OSHA training, First Aid, CPR and New Hire Safety Orientation.
  • Conduct regular job site visits and inspections to assess the existence of unsafe conditions/activities. Determine needed changes and communicate and work with appropriate parties to implement them.
  • Reviews options to remove/reduce potential hazards before schedule gets underway.
  • Assists with any abatement procedures and needs around potential contaminants so workers know what they are being exposed to (lead, asbestos, etc.) and how to protect themselves.
  • Review site-specific safety programs including evacuation routes, fire protection plan, demolition plan, emergency response and other client requests.
  • Prepares written reports of findings and recommendations for corrective or preventive measures where indicated and follows up to ensure measures have been implemented.
  • Fosters a culture of safety on job sites and in Shawmut offices; is a safety role-model and holds others accountable.
  • Other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Experience: 10+ years in Construction Safety Management. Proven track record working with insurance companies managing claims/risk/financial exposure. Experience supporting a rapidly growing organization.
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety/health or equivalent experience
  • Certifications:
    • Must be First Aid and CPR qualified (or within 1 year of hire).
    • OSHA 500 Authorized Instructor
    • Additional certifications obtained by the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) are preferred
  • Proficiency in MS Office software including Outlook, Word and Excel. Proficiency with Procore or ability to learn to new systems.
  • Additional Role Specific Skills: strong business acumen, extensive people management experience, thorough knowledge of all federal, state, and local safety regulations.
CRITICAL SKILLS/ SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA Construction Standards.
  • Ability to read and understand drawings and specifications.
  • Outstanding relationship-building skills including the ability to influence successfully without direct management authority. Must be able to build rapport, actively listen, and diffuse high-tension situations when needed.
  • Ability to be assertive, stay organized, handle various projects at one time, follow up and make accurate decisions.
  • Ability to speak and write clearly in English to write reports, business correspondence, and safety talks.
  • Ability to create a culture of inclusion and belonging by acting with courage, humility and curiosity; desire to learn about others and self-reflect.
Salary Range Information

LA Base Salary Range: $175,000 - $205,000 The range stated is specific to LA. Placement within the listed range depends on many factors including, but not limited to years of experience, project size capability (for Construction & Field roles) and internal company equity.
