Full Job Description
We are seeking a RF / Electrical Systems Engineer - Test Range Infrastructure to support our customer in Crane, Indiana. This position provides RF and electrical engineering support to NSWC Crane's RF Experimentation & Demonstration Branch (MXQT), with emphasis on signal communications management, stable power distribution, and test range electrical/telecommunications infrastructure supporting Counter-Improvised Explosive Device (CIED) and Counter-Unmanned Systems (CUxS) testing. The work is primarily office- and lab-based, with periodic field support for test events.

This role requires in-person support.

Duties:
  • Provide RF and electrical engineering support for signal communications management and power distribution in support of MXQT test and evaluation activities.
  • Design, analyze, evaluate, and optimize electrical and electronic test range infrastructure, including wired and wireless communications systems.
  • Manage and support fiber-to-cellular wireless tower architecture and associated telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Manage and evaluate test range power distribution systems and support improvements to reliability, safety, and operational performance.
  • Perform power system studies and engineering evaluations, including steady state, short circuit, dynamic stability, transient, harmonic, flicker, switching overvoltage, lightning, energization, and related analyses.
  • Apply technical knowledge of electronics principles to troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical and RF-related issues.
  • Conduct electrical and RF measurements on systems and components using specialized diagnostic and test equipment.
  • Support testing and evaluation of CIED and CUxS threat devices and associated processes.
  • Evaluate equipment design, assess system performance, and provide recommendations for technical improvement.
  • Test, evaluate, troubleshoot, repair, and support fiber optic and copper cable systems used in lab and range environments.
  • Support fielded power and communication cabling through design, evaluation, maintenance, management, and repair on test ranges.
  • Prepare support-equipment reports and related engineering documentation supporting system readiness and customer decision-making.
  • May perform quality assurance testing of assemblies and equipment fabricated by technicians.
  • Support work in both laboratory and outdoor field environments, including testing in variable weather and operational conditions.

Desired Education:
  • Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering or related technical discipline.

Desired Experience:
  • 3+ years of related professional experience in electrical engineering, RF systems, telecommunications, or test infrastructure support.
  • Working knowledge of power and energy distribution, wireless telecommunications, and RF signal design/processing.
  • Strong understanding of electrical theory, including high and low voltage, power, current, and resistance.
  • Proficiency with RF circuit schematics and RF design, including RF power, attenuation, filters, diplexers, antennas, and loads.
  • Understanding of RF transmission concepts, including scattering parameters and RF power-flow behavior.
  • Understanding of antenna theory and design, including physical geometry, material properties, and feed network impacts on coverage and efficiency.
  • Experience conducting RF measurements, including RF power, frequency, occupied bandwidth, and modulation assessment.
  • Familiarity with RF communication standards, modulation schemes, and communication protocols.
  • Practical knowledge of wireless digital signal behavior, system tradeoffs, and environmental effects on performance.
  • Familiarity with 3G, 4G, and 5G cellular technologies.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, especially in explaining technical matters clearly.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professional Engineer (PE) or Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) credentials.
  • Fiber optic certifications such as CFOT, CFOS/T, CFOS/D, CFOT S/O, CFOS/FC, or CFOS/W.
  • OSHA 10/30 training or related hazard management experience.
  • Experience supporting test ranges, RF labs, field instrumentation, or military telecommunications infrastructure.
