What We're Looking For

The future of transportation is complex, evolving rapidly, and confronted with increased risk from climate hazards. HNTB’s Resilient Infrastructure Solutions (RIS) team partners with clients to assess their vulnerability to extreme weather events and identify cost-effective solutions to mitigate risk and withstand changing conditions. We help clients navigate the uncertainty of the future through integrated services that prepare, adapt, and respond to change.

Our growing RIS team is seeking a creative, organized, and experienced engineer or planner eager to work on some of the region’s most exciting and transformative transportation projects. In this role, you will assist the development of climate resilience strategies for projects that prioritize safety, reduce disruption, protect our environment, and weather the complex, rapidly evolving future of our climate and the transportation sector.

You will support analyses and assessments that integrate resilience and environmental excellence into our client’s decision-making processes for programs, capital plans, and projects. This position will offer opportunities to expand your career in a multitude of directions, working alongside some of the region’s best engineers and planners, and peer-to-peer mentorship.

This position will primarily support resilience projects in the Northeast Division out of HNTB’s Boston office, including supporting the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT), Massachusetts Bay Transportation Agency (MBTA), with opportunities to support other transportation agencies across the country.

What You'll Do:

  • Completes assigned work within the schedule and number of hours provided.
  • Responsible for preparation and/or modification for select portions of project reports, plans, designs, and calculations.
  • Develops project quantities and assists with development of cost estimates.
  • Assists engineering teams with organization and administrative support of design files.
  • Able to self-sufficiently complete various tasks and duties including but not limited to research, data collection, field investigations, development, and design of projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

What You'll Need:

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering and 2 years of relevant experience, or
  • Master’s degree in Engineering and 1 year of relevant experience

What You'll Bring:

  • Experience working on interdisciplinary teams and delivering projects successfully, profitably, and to the client’s satisfaction.
  • Contributes to reports and assists in material preparation for presentations with guidance from more experienced staff.
  • Leverage knowledge of civil engineering practices, such as hydrology and open channel hydraulics, bridge design, geotechnical engineering, etc., and associated requirements and technical resources that govern these practices.
  • Recognizes which data and resources to use; assesses findings for the relevance for the project; compiles and analyzes the data for more experienced staff to review.
  • Experience supporting technical work in areas such as vulnerability assessments, risk analysis, flood modeling, infrastructure planning, resilience standards, nature-based solutions, and/or economic and demographic analyses.
  • Ability to review plans and project documents (plans and specifications) and apply critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and ability to manage time.

What We Prefer:

  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification.
  • Knowledge of the science and maths behind published climate data/maps and projections, including assumptions made in their development, and experience using these data/maps to identify appropriate usage, inform decision-making, and establish limitations.
  • Proficient performing data mining, cleaning, transformation, and aggregation tasks and in the preparation of datasets for modeling, forecasting, and scenario evaluation.
  • Experience in probability and statistics applied to scenario-based planning with consideration for climate projections and economic impacts.
  • Capable of developing data-driven insights by identifying trends, relationships, patterns, and anomalies in large datasets.
  • Experience supporting flood risk assessments using established software packages (e.g., HEC-FDA, G2CRM, beach-fx) or related software.
  • Experience or familiarity with the following computer applications: ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, Tableau, Power BI, Python, AWS, and other data processing, visualization, and cloud-based tools.

The approximate pay range for Massachusetts is $89,301.41 - $133,952.12. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be dependent on factors, including but not limited to, the individual’s qualifications, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities as well as physical work location within the state.
