This position is located in the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, headquartered in Atlanta, Georgia.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING DAY TO DAY

As a Research Science Officer, you will:

  • Prepare and review reports, articles, monographs, and other materials for accuracy, scientific merit, adherence to agency policy, and official clearance for public dissemination.
  • Serve as the principal scientific advisor to the Division Director by reviewing research protocols and ensuring scientific integrity, regulatory compliance, and adherence to applicable policies, ethical standards, and public health requirements.
  • Provide strategic leadership for the Division's research program by participating in policy and planning, coordinating information and resource needs, and establishing partnerships to strengthen program quality and effectiveness.
  • Supervise staff and direct administrative operations by overseeing workforce management, budget planning, strategic planning, personnel management, acquisition, contracts, and organizational resources.

WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR

Basic Qualifications: You must possess a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

AND

Minimum Qualifications: You must have one year of specialized experience to perform successfully the duties of the position. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service performing ALL of the following:

  • Providing scientific leadership and expert oversight for occupational respiratory disease research by reviewing and approving research proposals, manuscripts, technical reports, and other scientific products, ensuring scientific quality, accuracy, and program impact.
  • Ensuring the Division's occupational respiratory research and service programs comply with applicable federal laws, regulations, policies, and scientific standards while providing authoritative consultation on complex occupational respiratory disease issues to senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Leading strategic planning efforts by establishing long-range research priorities, identifying strategic and tactical initiatives, and aligning scientific programs with organizational goals to advance occupational respiratory health.
  • Supervising and developing a multidisciplinary workforce while participating in the administration of divisional operations, including budget, personnel, information technology, and other operational functions to support effective program management and mission accomplishment.
