Full Job Description
The Translational NeuroEngineering Laboratory (TNEL) in the Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral
Sciences is seeking a Research Professional 5 to support and lead complex human-subject research
investigating neuromodulation interventions for severe mental illness. The position coordinates and
independently executes research involving multiple neuromodulation approaches, including transcranial
magnetic stimulation, deep brain stimulation, temporal interference stimulation, transcranial alternating and
direct current stimulation, and focused ultrasound.

The position requires advanced scientific and technical expertise in neuromodulation, neurophysiology,
neuroimaging, programming, and experimental design. It serves as the laboratory's primary EEG subject
matter expert, supporting multiple research projects that depend on this expertise. The Research
Professional 5 independently leads significant research activities, develops experimental procedures and
computational workflows, and provides scientific guidance and oversight to research personnel. The
position includes formal supervision of undergraduate research volunteers and authorship or co-authorship
of peer-reviewed publications. The Principal Investigator retains overall responsibility for the laboratory and
research program.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:
55% - Independent Research, Scientific Leadership, and Technical Expertise
Independently lead and perform complex research activities involving neuromodulation,
electrophysiology/EEG, neuroimaging, and related neuroscience methods across multiple research projects. Exercise substantial independent judgment in developing and refining research approaches, experimental methods, data acquisition procedures, analytical workflows, and technical solutions to complex research problems.

Serve as the laboratory's primary subject matter expert in EEG/electrophysiology. Provide advanced scientific and technical expertise for multiple research projects that rely on EEG data acquisition, processing, analysis, interpretation, and integration with other neurophysiological and behavioral measures. Develop and refine EEG acquisition and analysis procedures, troubleshoot complex technical
and methodological issues, and provide guidance to investigators, research staff, trainees, and collaborators regarding appropriate methods and interpretation of results.

Independently analyze and interpret complex research data and contribute to scientific conclusions and decisions regarding subsequent research approaches. Develop, evaluate, and implement research tools, computational workflows, protocols, and standard operating procedures to support rigorous and reproducible research.

Provide day-to-day scientific and technical leadership for research activities within areas of expertise. Direct and oversee the work of staff and trainees involved in these activities, provide technical and scientific guidance, review work for quality and accuracy, and ensure that research procedures and analytical methods are implemented appropriately. The position includes formal supervisory responsibilities in addition to scientific mentoring and technical oversight.

Lead and substantially contribute to dissemination of research findings. Serve as an author or co-author on peer-reviewed manuscripts, conference abstracts, scientific presentations, and other scholarly products. Responsibilities include interpretation of results, development of scientific conclusions, preparation and revision of manuscripts and presentations, and response to scientific feedback. The incumbent has an established record of authorship/co-authorship on peer-reviewed publications.

Operate with a high degree of independence in carrying out these responsibilities. While the Principal Investigator retains overall responsibility for the laboratory and research program, this position independently leads significant components of the laboratory's research activities and serves as a scientific and technical resource for multiple projects and research personnel.

20% - Study Coordination and Regulatory Activities
Develop and coordinate study start-up and implementation activities, including participant recruitment and scheduling, protocol implementation, regulatory documentation, study tracking, quality control, data management, protocol amendments, adverse event and deviation reporting, and other activities necessary for compliant and timely execution of human-subject research.

15% - Research Leadership, Supervision, and Project Management
Provide formal supervision of undergraduate research volunteers, including assigning responsibilities, establishing work priorities, training personnel, monitoring progress, and reviewing work for quality and accuracy. Provide day-to-day scientific and technical guidance, mentoring, and oversight to clinical research coordinators, graduate students, and other research personnel within areas of expertise. Develop standard operating procedures and training materials; coordinate multidisciplinary project activities; and monitor progress toward study milestones and project aims.

5% - Research Collaboration and Engagement
Coordinate patient and community engagement activities and collaborate with clinical, academic, engineering, and industry partners supporting research studies and technology development.

5% - Professional and Scientific Development
Maintain and develop technical, regulatory, scientific, and leadership expertise. Attend and present research at local, national, and international scientific meetings and participate in other professional-development activities.
