What You Will Do

This position will be filled at either the Engineering Technologist 2 or 3 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.

The Product Realization and Reliability Office (PRRO) is seeking an experienced, safety-minded Predictive Maintenance professional, proficient in the utilization of Predictive Maintenance tools, and able to effectively facilitate conflict resolutions, to serve as a Reliability Technologist for its Asset-Centered Maintenance & Engineering: Execution - Predictive Maintenance Technology team.
The Reliability Technologist reports to a First Line Manger with a Team Lead coordinating their daily assignments. This is a pivotal role in supporting the development, implementation, operation, and Continuous Improvement (CI) of a Predictive Maintenance program for the directorate. This role will include hands-on Predictive Maintenance route execution and equipment condition monitoring, driving front-line quantitative, objective data-gathering and data-analysis. The selected candidate will work directly in cross-functional collaborations with engineering, maintenance, operations, and management stakeholders to ensure the Predictive Maintenance program supports organizational needs - patience, courtesy, and respect are paramount.

Reliability Technologist 2 - Engineering Technologist 2 ($96,600 - $158,000)

  • Analyze failure modes and their impacts on operations.
  • Collaborate with Reliability Engineers to develop reliability improvement plans.
  • Support root cause analysis investigations and corrective actions.
  • Assist in the development and refinement of preventive maintenance strategies using system performance data, technician feedback, and failure history to improve asset reliability.
  • Structure and maintain asset hierarchy and master data within the CMMS.
  • Create, revise, and validate technical drawings and documentation using CAD tools - actively participate in design reviews and process readiness assessments.
  • Support equipment configuration, upgrades, and reviews of vendor technical proposals.
  • Evaluate PM effectiveness and scheduling in collaboration with planners, recommending improvements based on work history and equipment criticality.
  • Use CMMS and analytical software to monitor equipment performance, generate technical documentation, and communicate findings to engineering and operations teams.
  • Serve as a technical resource/mentor to junior Reliability Technologists, maintenance personnel, and entry-level production staff.

Reliability Technologist 3 - Engineering Technologist 3 ($106,400 - $176,000)
In addition to what was outlined at the lower level, at this level this position is expected to:

  • Provide technical leadership for reliability and maintenance programs both directorate- and lab-wide.
  • Drive long-range planning efforts related to equipment reliability and maintenance strategies.
  • Develop and implement policies, standards, and common processes for maintenance and reliability activities.
  • Lead and influence predictive maintenance and reliability improvement initiatives.
  • Evaluate program effectiveness and recommend improvements based on performance metrics and risk.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for reliability methodologies and predictive maintenance technologies.
  • Mentor technologists and maintenance personnel and guide technical decision-making.
  • Interface with management, engineering, and operations leadership on reliability priorities and risks.
  • Assist in evaluating equipment strategies to determine PdM applicability and priority - PRRO-ACME: Planning & Sustainment.
  • Assist the development of PdM implementation plans, including scope, timelines, and coordination requirements.
  • Validate PdM route execution and condition monitoring activities to support program validation and data collection.
  • Track implementation progress and help remove barriers to execution.
  • Support communication efforts to educate stakeholders on PdM benefits and reliability improvements.
  • Assist in establishing asset hierarchies and ensuring CMMS alignment for PdM integration.
  • Participate in root cause evaluations and help translate findings into preventive or predictive strategies.


What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Engineering Technologist 2

  • Proficiency in at least 2 predictive maintenance technologies (Thermography, Vibration Analysis, Ultrasonic, Motion Amplification).
  • Proven track record conducting failure analysis and supporting reliability improvements
  • Intermediate to advanced CMMS administration including asset hierarchy and preventive maintenance optimization
  • Proficient with CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or similar

Engineering Technologist 3

  • In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
  • Expert-level proficiency across multiple predictive maintenance technologies
  • Experience with budget management, resource allocation, and vendor management
  • Advanced CMMS configuration, integration, and master data management expertise
  • Experience delivering training programs and creating technical standards and procedures
  • Strong conflict resolution and negotiation skills with the ability to influence senior leadership

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 2 level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, science, math or a related degree from an accredited institution and 5 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related.

Education/Experience at Engineering Technologist 3 level: Position requires a bachelor's degree in engineering technology, Science, Math or a related degree from an accredited institution and 8 years related experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Current DOE Q clearance
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license
  • Experience with LANL systems such as Asset Suite and Footprints
  • Experience in Nuclear Facility Operations, Engineering and/or Maintenance
  • Demonstrated ability with conflict resolution
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Experience with techniques such as vibration analysis, thermography, ultra-sonic, shock pulse, motor circuit analysis, laser-shaft alignment and/or oil analysis is preferred

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Work Schedule: Onsite, 4/10. Note: This position may require 24/7 coverage, which could involve working a shift/weekend schedule. Employees may be eligible for shift differential pay when assigned by their manager. Shift/weekend assignments are at the discretion of the manager.

Essential Job Functions (can perform with or without reasonable accommodation):

  • Ability to work in industrial environments, climb ladders, access confined spaces, and life up to 50 lbs.

Position Commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
