Position Summary

The Reliability Engineer owns reliability performance for pens, printheads, materials, and related subsystem technologies throughout product development and lifecycle support. This role develops qualification strategies, executes reliability test plans, identifies failure mechanisms, and drives corrective actions to ensure products meet customer, business, manufacturing, and long-term performance requirements.

This role partners with product engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, supply chain, suppliers, and external partners to resolve technical issues, reduce reliability risk, and support successful product delivery.

Key Responsibilities

Reliability Planning & Product Development
  • Own reliability performance of pens, printheads, materials, and related subsystem technologies throughout product development and lifecycle support.
  • Develop Reliability Integration Plans (RIPs), qualification strategies, validation plans, sample allocation plans, and success criteria.
  • Support design reviews, risk assessments, FMEA activities, qualification planning, manufacturing readiness, and production ramp.
  • Identify reliability risks early and develop mitigation plans that support product readiness and lifecycle performance.
  • Drive qualification and characterization activities for new products, materials, suppliers, engineering changes, and cost-reduction initiatives.

Reliability Testing, Characterization & Analysis
  • Develop and execute reliability test plans covering environmental robustness, storage, shipping and handling, material compatibility, durability, and long-term product performance.
  • Design and execute experiments to evaluate design sensitivity, material interactions, environmental effects, and product performance drivers.
  • Analyze reliability data, test results, trends, and failure modes using appropriate statistical and engineering methods.
  • Investigate interactions among product designs, materials, inks, manufacturing processes, and environmental conditions.
  • Communicate technical conclusions, reliability risks, recommendations, and mitigation plans to project teams and stakeholders.

Failure Analysis, Manufacturing & Product Support
  • Lead root cause investigations for reliability failures, qualification issues, supplier concerns, manufacturing excursions, engineering changes, and field-related issues.
  • Identify failure mechanisms and drive corrective actions that improve product robustness and prevent recurrence.
  • Support supplier qualification, alternate material authorization, manufacturing process changes, and engineering change management.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing, quality, supply chain, suppliers, and external partners to resolve technical challenges and support product readiness.

Cross-Functional Collaboration & Communication
  • Partner with product engineering, materials engineering, manufacturing engineering, quality engineering, supply chain, suppliers, and external partners to support successful product delivery.
  • Provide clear technical communication on reliability performance, qualification status, failure analysis findings, and recommended actions.
  • Support product lifecycle management activities by resolving reliability risks and maintaining product performance through changes and sustaining activities.
  • Demonstrate strong customer focus, cross-functional collaboration, results orientation, and sound engineering judgment.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Reliability Engineering, or related field.
  • 5+ years of experience in reliability engineering, product qualification, product development, failure analysis, materials engineering, or related technical fields.
  • Experience developing and executing test plans, qualification plans, validation plans, or experimental studies.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, root cause analysis, technical communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills.
  • Experience analyzing engineering data using JMP, Minitab, Python, MATLAB, Excel, or similar tools.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with thermal inkjet technologies, printheads, pens, ink delivery systems, or industrial printing systems.
  • Knowledge of reliability engineering principles, product qualification methodologies, environmental testing, durability testing, storage robustness, and shipping qualification.
  • Experience with materials science, polymers, plastics, elastomers, adhesives, and material compatibility assessment.
  • Experience identifying failure mechanisms, conducting structured root cause investigations, and validating corrective actions.
  • Experience with DOE, statistical analysis, reliability characterization, FMEA participation, supplier qualification, alternate material authorization, and engineering change management.
