JOB SUMMARY

It is an exciting time to join the growing and developing electric utility industry. As a Regulatory Compliance Support Engineer, you will be part of a talented team providing technical services in the electrical discipline to support the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) within Southern Company. These services include program management of numerous North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) standards, support of market requests from transmission providers, training and coordination with all generating facilities, and engagement in NERC standards drafting teams for standards development. This role is vital in supporting the conventional and renewable generation fleet and helping them meet the requirements necessary to ensure a reliable power grid.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Work within the ERO Support team to ensure no compliance violations.
  • Collaborate with project managers and third-party vendors on new plant builds and retrofits.
  • Be a role model both technically and in dealing with customers for other engineers.
  • Actively participate on industry committees and drafting teams as appropriate.
  • Provide support for technical issues as needed. Maintain technical proficiency in the above-mentioned areas.
  • Cultivate and maintain contacts and relationships within the plant and with Operations Compliance.
  • Ability to develop and become a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for assigned NERC standards.

Essential Functions:
  • Working knowledge of protective relaying application and philosophy.
  • Familiarity with plant electrical equipment and generator voltage control.
  • Experience evaluating and complying with NERC standards preferred.
  • Broad general knowledge of power plants.
  • General knowledge of power plant modeling techniques.
  • Ability to communicate with plant employees at all working and management levels.
  • Assess risk and understand impact to stakeholders.
  • Manage time properly and handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite.
  • This position will require some travel (day and overnight, up to 25%) and the ability to work successfully in a remote/virtual environment with access to internet service.


Education Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science Degree (BS) in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution/program is required. Electrical Engineering is preferred.
